Though Gong Li seems rather dreamy, fluid, and impressionable (as mentioned in the previous chapter), she is actually very realistic and well grounded. Her compassion and receptivity to others' feelings discussed earlier is balanced by a rather pragmatic, businesslike, no-nonsense aspect to her character, as described below.

Serious, disciplined and quietly ambitious, she is driven to prove herself and to achieve material accomplishments and success. Her work, her position in the world, and her contributions to society are very important to Gong Li. Gong Li will persevere through enormous hardship and frustration in order to reach a goal she has set for herself, and she often sacrifices much in the area of personal relationships and home life in order to do so.
