John Boswell motivation
John Boswell often senses a conflict between his discriminating, analytical, critical side (described in the previous chapter), and his tolerant, forgiving side (described below). Consequently, Boswell tends to seesaw - at times criticizing and correcting others while at others, forgiving them for the most egregious errors and inadequacies. John Boswell should strive to find a balance between clarity and justice on the one hand, and mercy and compassion on the other.
Boswell's urge to serve, help and improve the life of others is strong, and he is quite willing to make personal sacrifices to do so.
At heart he is very gentle, impressionable and receptive - a dreamer. The world of his imagination, feelings, and intuition is as real to John Boswell as anything in the outer world, though he may have trouble verbalizing or interpreting his inner experiences in a way others can understand. Mystical, artistic, musical, emotional and imaginative, he has a rich inner life, though Boswell may seem rather unobtrusive and quiet outwardly. John Boswell usually keeps to himself.
John shows great sensitivity and empathy toward others and often senses things psychically or intuitively which prove to be correct. He is tolerant, forgiving and nonjudgmental, accepting people unconditionally regardless of their flaws, mistakes, or outward appearance. John has deep compassion for the suffering of any fellow creature and he often feels the pain of others as if it were his own. John Boswell sympathizes with the needy, the disadvantaged and the misfits of society. He is capable of giving selflessly, living a life of devoted and compassionate service to others, as a healer, physician, social worker or minister. However, Boswell tends to give indiscriminately, to let others take advantage of his kindness, and to encourage the weak to remain so by becoming dependent upon him. John has little sense of boundaries, or of knowing when to say "no". Moderation and self-discipline are not his strong points.
He is a lover and a peacemaker rather than a fighter, and he tries to avoid open conflict. Boswell will patiently ignore or "tune out" problems and hope they will go away by themselves, rather than confront them directly and Boswell tends to lack the positive, fighting spirit that is sometimes necessary to overcome challenges. He is fluid, open, nonresistant and somewhat passive. John Boswell does things in a subtle, often covert, manner.
His gifts may also lie in the realm of the creative, artistic, or musical, for he possesses great sensitivity, inspiration and limitless imagination. John Boswell has a strong affinity for beauty and love.
His faults include a tendency to be lazy and negligent, and to wallow in self-pity rather than take strong, definite action to change his life for the better. He also tends to become so detached from his immediate environment that he lives in a disorderly, chaotic sort of hodgepodge, though this probably bothers those around Boswell more than it bothers him.
John Boswell craves intense experiences and is attracted to aspects of life that are strange, unfathomable or taboo. John may hide his interests or inclinations, except from those who know him very intimately. John Boswell is rarely content with himself and his life, and he has an inner urge to continually delve deeper than ever before. John is also highly interested in social power and the role that money and economics play in people's lives.
John has lofty aspirations but does not struggle or labor to achieve them. His self-confidence and inner harmony attract success and benefit him in an almost magical way. His optimism and cheerful generosity also win Boswell many allies and successes in life.
However he also has a more somber side, which keeps Boswell's optimism from becoming ungrounded or overblown. John Boswell tends to seesaw between his faith, vision and high aspirations, and his caution and realism (or fear!). He cannot and does not rely on good luck or grace alone, and he accepts the need for hard work. His skeptical or "somber" side is described below.
Realistic and practical, John Boswell sets goals for himself that are modest enough for him to actually achieve. He is able to tackle long, difficult projects and see them through, for Boswell possesses self-discipline, concentration and perseverance. John Boswell also has a strong sense of responsibility and is very conscientious about fulfilling his obligations. Boswell often does things because he feels it is expected of him.
He may lack direction and drive and tends to compare himself unfavorably to others. Boswell alternates between caution and unrealistic expectations and lets others expect too much of him. But John Boswell plods forward steadily, reaching success later in life.
