John Boswell often senses a conflict between his discriminating, analytical, critical side (described in the previous chapter), and his tolerant, forgiving side (described below). Consequently, Boswell tends to seesaw - at times criticizing and correcting others while at others, forgiving them for the most egregious errors and inadequacies. John Boswell should strive to find a balance between clarity and justice on the one hand, and mercy and compassion on the other.
