Although Ray (Jesse) Gordy appears gentle and sympathetic toward others (as explained in the previous chapter), he is also a "warrior". Ray Gordy sometimes feels torn between these two facets of his character: the sensitive, tenderhearted, home-loving side, and the assertive, competitive, risk-taking side. People who first meet Ray (Jesse) Gordy often think that he is a "softy", but later find out that he is strong willed and pursues his goals aggressively.

He is a person who thrives on challenge, and he often feels that he must battle his way through life, relying on no one and nothing but his own strength, intelligence and courage. Ray (Jesse) Gordy believes in being totally honest, true to himself and his own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are Ray Gordy's gods, and he has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.

Ray (Jesse) Gordy craves the freedom to do things in his own way, and he works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not his style. Jesse likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.

Ray (Jesse) Gordy loves action and if others are settling down into a nice, comfortable little rut, then he is always ready to stir things up, do something new, make changes and introduce some fresh blood. He is not satisfied with the personal sphere alone; his ambitions include making a major contribution and receiving broad recognition for his unique effort and gifts. Ray (Jesse) Gordy may undervalue the personal or inner facet of life.

Ray (Jesse) Gordy tends to see things from his perspective only and to be rather subjective. He also enjoys talking and expressing his views but does not always listen as well. Ray (Jesse) Gordy has a clear mind, a love of learning and new experiences, and he needs constant mental stimulation and activity.

Ray Gordy's subconscious needs and feelings blend well with his conscious intentions and desires, therefore Ray (Jesse) Gordy is able to proceed with his life's pursuits relatively unhampered by internal resistance or inconsistency. Jesse has lofty aspirations but does not struggle or labor to achieve them. His self-confidence and inner harmony attract success and benefit him in an almost magical way. His optimism and cheerful generosity also win Ray Gordy many allies and successes in life.

Ray (Jesse) Gordy tends to impose his will upon others in a rather ruthless way, but on the other hand he may also be imposed upon by others. Jesse feels a constant need to fight for leadership and has a great desire to become a public figure.
