Pope Pius X motivation
Although he has lofty ideals and is high-minded in many ways (as mentioned in the previous chapter), there is a side of Pope Pius X that is sly, funny, and really cannot take anything too seriously. His sense of humor saves Giuseppe Sarto from becoming overly earnest about himself or the things he believes in.
Pope Pius X is, in many ways, an eternal child. His mind is bright, alert, curious, flexible, playful and always eager for new experiences - and his attention span is often quite brief. Giuseppe Sarto grasps ideas quickly and once his initial curiosity has been satisfied, he is ready to move on. Pope Pius X craves frequent change and variety, as well as new situations and people.
It may be hard for Pope Pius X to decide just where his talents and true vocation lie, for he has a multitude of interests and is loathe limiting himself by concentrating on just one. He is easily distracted by all of the other fascinating possibilities. His curiosity and restlessness propel Pope Pius X toward many different experiences in life, and he is willing to taste or try anything once. Doing the same thing over and over again, even if it is something he does well, is tantamount to drudgery for Giuseppe Sarto.
Pope Pius X lives in his head a great deal - reading, observing, thinking, spinning ideas around - and he needs mental stimulation every bit as much as he needs food and drink. In fact, if Pope Pius X had to choose between a good book or movie and a good lunch, he would very likely choose the former. Pope Pius X has a creative mind and he often lives by his wits.
He is also a very social creature, with a strong need to communicate and interact with people. He enjoys using and playing with words and has a real flair for getting his ideas across in a clever, interesting, articulate manner. Writing and/or speaking are areas he has talent for.
Pope Pius X also has a rather lighthearted and mischievous sense of humor, and often does not take anything too seriously. Though he craves emotional involvement, it is hard for Pope Pius X to achieve it, for he is frequently unwilling to commit himself to anything, to take responsibility or to limit his personal freedom and mobility.
His happiness lies in using his creativity and language skills to communicate something meaningful, teach, inspire, or bring people together. Pope Pius X has an unbiased mind and can usually offer a fresh, clear, uncluttered perspective. His faults are his lack of constancy and persistence, and his tendency to overlook or ignore deep emotional issues and other people's feelings.
He is a private person and inclined to withdraw in very public and impersonal social settings. Pope Pius X prefers to work at home or in a very personal small business.
Giuseppe Sarto invests a lot of his creative energy into his home, family relationships, and his inner life.
Pope Pius X undergoes deep, transformative changes in his life with relative ease and a minimum of conscious resistance. Because he does not avoid the depths, Giuseppe Sarto has access to a lot of personal power and strength. Without realizing it or seeking it, Pope Pius X is apt to have quite a potent effect on the people he comes into contact with, even superficially. Others sense that Pope Pius X is a force to be reckoned with.
Giuseppe Sarto seems to lack self-confidence and has a sense of anxiety and insecurity that has no obvious cause. Pope Pius X tends to withdraw and his outlook in general could be a bit too negative. Pope Pius X should beware of letting his emotional tension react to his physical well-being.
