Although he has lofty ideals and is high-minded in many ways (as mentioned in the previous chapter), there is a side of Pope Pius X that is sly, funny, and really cannot take anything too seriously. His sense of humor saves Giuseppe Sarto from becoming overly earnest about himself or the things he believes in.
