Behind de Leeuw's upbeat, friendly, open manner (described in the previous chapter), there is a very competitive, me-first, play-to-win sort of person.

He is a person who thrives on challenge, and he often feels that he must battle his way through life, relying on no one and nothing but his own strength, intelligence and courage. Paul de Leeuw believes in being totally honest, true to himself and his own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are de Leeuw's gods, and he has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.

Paul de Leeuw craves the freedom to do things in his own way, and he works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not his style. Paul likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.
