His self-reliant, independent spirit described in the previous chapter, combined with his strong sense of community and larger social issues, compel Dean to take a strong stand on various ideological and political issues. James Dean feels that others are often too unconcerned and uninvolved in larger social issues that affect them directly. Political activism or being a "warrior" for a cause that is dear to his heart may be James' path in life.

He is a freedom-loving, strong-willed and independent-minded individual, and he insists upon living his own life as he sees fit, even if it means ignoring convention and tradition. In personal relationships, James Dean cannot be owned or possessed, and while he is willing to share himself with another, he does not always adjust easily to the emotional give and take of close relationships.
