Gene Parsons motivation
Although Gene Parsons appears gentle and sympathetic toward others (as explained in the previous chapter), he is also a "warrior". Parsons sometimes feels torn between these two facets of his character: the sensitive, tenderhearted, home-loving side, and the assertive, competitive, risk-taking side. People who first meet Gene Parsons often think that he is a "softy", but later find out that he is strong willed and pursues his goals aggressively.
He is a person who thrives on challenge, and he often feels that he must battle his way through life, relying on no one and nothing but his own strength, intelligence and courage. Gene Parsons believes in being totally honest, true to himself and his own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are Parsons' gods, and he has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.
Gene Parsons craves the freedom to do things in his own way, and he works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not his style. Gene likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.
Gene Parsons loves action and if others are settling down into a nice, comfortable little rut, then he is always ready to stir things up, do something new, make changes and introduce some fresh blood. Routine and sameness are tantamount to death for him. He is not afraid of trying something that has never been done before, and even though he may sometimes be perceived as a fool, Gene Parsons also discovers, invents and initiates things that others will later emulate. Taking risks and following his own star are the breath of life for Parsons, and he wilts (or gets very frustrated and angry) if he cannot do this.
He is spontaneous, impulsive, direct, enthusiastic and assertive. Gene Parsons believes in the power of positive thinking and positive action, and he perceives himself as a strong, even invincible, person. Gene Parsons hates being ill or in a position of dependency. Accepting his own human limitations and emotional needs is often difficult for him.
He is basically aggressive in his attitudes and less adept at relating to others, picking up on subtle messages and nuances, listening, nurturing and harmonizing. He is often so fired up about his own projects or goals that he inadvertently runs over or ignores other people's feelings and interests. Being receptive and appreciative of others' contributions, ideas and feelings would be highly instrumental in improving Parsons' relationships. His impatience to get on with things causes Gene Parsons to be rather insensitive, thereby alienating others unnecessarily. He also frequently tries to accomplish his goals through anger or temper tantrums. Gene Parsons would gain much by learning to slow down, relax and sometimes just let things be, however his energetic, restless nature rarely allows Gene Parsons to do so.
His career, reputation, and public image are very important to Parsons. Gene Parsons has a strong desire to be influential or make his mark on the world. The merely personal sphere does not satisfy him; his ambitions include making a major contribution and receiving broad recognition for his unique effort and gifts. Gene Parsons may undervalue the personal or inner side of life.
Gene has lofty aspirations but does not struggle or labor to achieve them. His self-confidence and inner harmony attract success and benefit him in an almost magical way. His optimism and cheerful generosity also win Parsons many allies and successes in life.
However he also has a more somber side, which keeps Parsons' optimism from becoming ungrounded or overblown. Gene Parsons tends to seesaw between his faith, vision and high aspirations, and his caution and realism (or fear!). He cannot and does not rely on good luck or grace alone, and he accepts the need for hard work. His skeptical or "somber" side is described below.
Gene Parsons has a healthy amount of self-control and self-discipline. Parsons also radiates a rather responsible, trustworthy, solid feeling about himself which will win him the confidence of others, especially his superiors.
Parsons always seems to find the right words to verbalize his feelings, especially in regard to love and friendship. Gene Parsons also has a keen sense of beauty and he probably appreciates art, music or poetry.
