Behind Dostoevsky's rather jovial, open, enthusiastic demeanor (as described on the previous page), there is a very different side to him - deeper, more serious, and more emotionally intense, as described below. His optimism and idealism are tempered and balanced by a certain skepticism and a sense of the darker side of life and of people.

Quiet, deep, emotionally complex and intensely private, he is not a person who is easy to get to know and understand. Fyodor Dostoevsky is extremely sensitive but disinclined to show it, and he only allows a special few into his inner world. Like a wary animal, he is cautious and mistrustful of those he does not know until "he sniffs them out". He is highly instinctive and intuitive. Fyodor Dostoevsky usually has a strong, immediate gut reaction to people, even though he may be unable to clearly articulate why he feels the way he does. His feelings and perceptions go deeper than words.

Fyodor Dostoevsky also has a powerful need for deep emotional relationships and he forms very intense love bonds and attachments. He is possessive and often jealous of anyone or anything that he perceives as a threat to his relationship with someone he loves. When Dostoevsky has been wounded, he is not inclined to turn the other cheek and will retaliate if at all possible. Fyodor will most certainly never forget the hurt and he often harbors grievances and resentment for a very long time. Forgiveness does not come easily to him.

Whatever he does, Fyodor does with passion and fervor, and he often goes to extremes. Dostoevsky can be hot or cold, but never lukewarm about anything. Dostoevsky can also be very narrow-minded: either he is 100% involved in something or it does not exist for him at all. Rarely is Fyodor Dostoevsky emotionally detached and objective. He definitely has a fanatical streak. He is also immensely strong-willed and his tenacity in pursuing his objectives often borders on obsession. He is filled with fierce pride, courage and emotional strength.

Fyodor Dostoevsky loves mysteries and is deeply attracted to the hidden, dark, secret side of life. Fyodor never takes things at face value and is always probing beneath the surface of people and situations to discover what is really going on. Fyodor Dostoevsky tends to be more of a cynic than an idealist.

Leading groups and classes, and being involved in community efforts, social activities, events or movements are areas where Fyodor Dostoevsky really shines and expresses his creativity. An awareness of politics or the larger social impact of individual actions is natural to him.

He is direct, energetic, sometimes aggressive and combative. Fyodor Dostoevsky often feels that he needs to fight to get what he wants, and he tends to have a "me-first" attitude that angers or irritates others. He is hasty, restless, impatient and sometimes reckless.

While Fyodor Dostoevsky does have a strong drive, he frequently holds himself back. One of his challenges lies in learning to endure frustration and to patiently overcome the obstacles in his life (or his own internal caution and resistance!).

Fyodor has to overcome considerable hardship in order to fulfill his personal destiny. However, he does have the strength and stamina necessary to do so. Support and helpful guidance from his father or other significant men in his life may well be lacking. In fact, their disapproval of Fyodor and their harsh criticism are apt to be two of his greatest handicaps, and at times he may feel quite discouraged and alone. But true self-reliance and a solid sense of his own powers may well be the silver lining to that cloud in his life. Fyodor Dostoevsky needs to learn to follow his own creative impulses and heart's desires, regardless of what his critics or the authorities say.
