Behind Pound's forthright and candid manner described in the previous chapter, there is a very private, even secretive, person. He is more complex and keeps more inside than his direct, straightforward appearance would suggest.

Quiet, deep, emotionally complex and intensely private, he is not a person who is easy to get to know and understand. Ezra Pound is extremely sensitive but disinclined to show it, and he only allows a special few into his inner world. Like a wary animal, he is cautious and mistrustful of those he does not know until "he sniffs them out". He is highly instinctive and intuitive. Ezra Pound usually has a strong, immediate gut reaction to people, even though he may be unable to clearly articulate why he feels the way he does. His feelings and perceptions go deeper than words.

Ezra Pound also has a powerful need for deep emotional relationships and he forms very intense love bonds and attachments. He is possessive and often jealous of anyone or anything that he perceives as a threat to his relationship with someone he loves. When Ezra Pound commits himself to someone or something, he is wholeheartedly devoted and expects complete loyalty in return. Ezra merges with or "marries" the person he loves at a very deep level and therefore separations are extremely painful for him, and often stormy and nasty. When Pound has been wounded, he is not inclined to turn the other cheek and will retaliate if at all possible. Ezra will most certainly never forget the hurt and he often harbors grievances and resentment for a very long time. Forgiveness does not come easily to him.

Whatever he does, Ezra does with passion and fervor, and he often goes to extremes. Pound can be hot or cold, but never lukewarm about anything. Pound can also be very narrow-minded: either he is 100% involved in something or it does not exist for him at all. Rarely is Ezra Pound emotionally detached and objective. He definitely has a fanatical streak. He is also immensely strong-willed and his tenacity in pursuing his objectives often borders on obsession. He is filled with fierce pride, courage and emotional strength.

Ezra Pound loves mysteries and is deeply attracted to the hidden, dark, secret side of life. Ezra never takes things at face value and is always probing beneath the surface of people and situations to discover what is really going on. Ezra Pound tends to be more of a cynic than an idealist.

Ezra Pound invests a tremendous amount of his creative energy into his relationships with others, particularly his marriage or other close partnerships. Ezra feels that he needs others in order to be all that he can be, and he is disinclined to solitary activities and endeavors.

Working with people on a one-to-one basis to bring about mutual understanding, harmony, and satisfaction is an area in which Ezra Pound can really excel. Counseling or negotiating are talents of his.

Ezra Pound often feels that he is at cross purposes with himself, for his conscious intentions and desires conflict with his subconscious emotional needs and drives. He is torn in two different directions. Ezra has difficulty satisfying both his need to be an individual and his need for caring relationships and a sense of belonging. Moreover, Ezra sends out mixed messages so people do not always know how to respond to him or what Ezra really wants, thereby creating confusion or conflict in close relationships.

Realistic and practical, Ezra Pound sets goals for himself that are modest enough for him to actually achieve. He is able to tackle long, difficult projects and see them through, for Pound possesses self-discipline, concentration and perseverance. Ezra Pound also has a strong sense of responsibility and is very conscientious about fulfilling his obligations. Pound often does things because he feels it is expected of him.

He is polite and gallant and makes a special effort to meet others half-way. Ezra Pound has the ability to give and receive love. Nurturing friendships, personal love relationships and social life is important to him.
