Behind Cheney's quiet, unassuming, cautious front (described in the previous chapter) lies a much more unconventional, liberal-thinking, freedom-loving soul, described below.

He is a freedom-loving, strong-willed, and independent-minded individual, and he insists upon living his own life as he sees fit, even if that means ignoring convention and tradition. In personal relationships Dick Cheney cannot be owned or possessed, and while he is willing to share himself with another, he does not always adjust easily to the emotional give and take of close relationships. Though intellectually open, Cheney can be enormously stubborn, opinionated, and inflexible on a one-to-one level. Dick has strong convictions and feelings about fairness and equality, and he tries to live by his ideals, but his ideals about how people "should" treat one another do not always take into account human weaknesses, differences, and needs. Dick Cheney probably dislikes sentimentality and traditional gender roles and "games".

He is fair, intelligent, objective, and rational and he often let his head rule rather than his heart. Dick Cheney seems rather self-sufficient and detached emotionally because he is capable of putting aside his personal feelings and viewing things dispassionately. But once Dick makes up his mind on an issue, he is difficult to sway and can be rather dogmatic.

Dick Cheney thinks in broad terms and is concerned with the world beyond his own personal sphere - his town, nation, or even planet. He is likely to become involved in community affairs, social organizations, and groups of all kinds, or to have a keen interest in such. He enjoys being part of a group endeavor, and he often assumes the role of organizing, managing, or supervising group activities.

Forward-looking and progressive, he harbors great hopes for the future. Dick Cheney stays current and up to date, and responds to contemporary cultural trends, both in terms of personal style and in terms of ideas. When young, Dick Cheney was very influenced by his peers and by group pressures and by all the "latest crazes". Dick has an experimental mind and is attracted by the novel.

His strong points include his concern for human welfare and social betterment, his sense of fairness and democratic spirit, and his vision. His faults are his stubbornness and inflexibility, and a tendency to be very obtuse and insensitive when it comes to personal feelings and human needs.

His energies are directed to either perfecting his techniques, skills, and abilities in work, or in "perfecting", refining, and improving himself as a person. Critical analysis and attention to minute detail are intrinsic in either process. The urge to bring about a state of wholeness or optimal functioning is a strong motivation of Dick Cheney's, and he is quite a perfectionist!

Cheney can easily become overly identified or involved with the function he performs, with his work, or with his own health and "growth process".

Dick has big aspirations and the desire to succeed in life in a grand way. Dick Cheney tends to exaggerate, to promise more than is possible, and to misjudge through being overly optimistic. However, he never loses his hopes for the future. Restlessness and discontent with responsibilities and limitations in life can be troublesome for Cheney.

However he also has a heavier side which keeps Cheney's optimism from becoming ungrounded or overblown. Dick Cheney tends to seesaw between his faith, vision and high aspirations, and his caution and realism (or fear!). He cannot and does not rely on good luck or grace alone, and he accepts the need for hard work. His doubting or "heavy" side is described below.

Feelings of personal inadequacy, inhibitions, and self-doubt often plague him. Dick Cheney has a cautious, careful, realistic attitude toward life and is highly responsible and disciplined with regard to his obligations and duties. Dick Cheney tends to work and struggle more than he needs to, and to take himself too seriously.
