D. H. Lawrence drive and ambition
D. H. Lawrence avoids direct confrontation as much as possible and is uncomfortable with aggressiveness, competition, and personal power. His ego drive is not very strong and Lawrence is not especially ambitious or eager to push his way to the top. He may feel inadequate in situations that call for strong, forceful action. The only instance in which D. H. Lawrence will really fight is when he feels his loved ones, or something dear to him, is being harmed, for then he is a fierce defender. D. H. Lawrence has a very strong protective side. He acts on impulse and instinct and may lash out at anyone he perceives as threatening to David Herbert's home or family. However, D. H. Lawrence will rarely initiate a confrontation. His goals also tend to be very personal and centered on family closeness and inner satisfaction rather than worldly achievement.
He is sensitive to stress and does not handle a high-pressured, competitive atmosphere very well. D. H. Lawrence is very touchy, irritable, and difficult to live with when there are many demands or tensions at work. His energy level is inconstant and is very much dependent upon the emotional harmony (or lack of it) in his home. A supportive partner is of great benefit to Lawrence in helping him to achieve his goals and desires.
He has passionate convictions and will fight for them when challenged. D. H. Lawrence is willing to dedicate a great deal of his energy and force to an important cause, and he will act decisively on his beliefs, rather than simply espousing them.
Sometimes Lawrence gets so involved and identified with his ideas that he cannot really be receptive to anyone who opposes him philosophically.
Unlike some who have hopes and fantasies, Lawrence is a person who tries to live out these dreams, no matter how impractical or fantastic they seem. D. H. Lawrence has a quixotic, idealistic streak. He may be more inspired to work for some higher cause than simply for his own personal achievement.
