Che Guevara approach to life and appearances
The following is a description of Che Guevara's basic stance toward life, the way others see him, the way Che Guevara comes across, the face he shows to the world. In the page about motivation you will read about the inner Che Guevara - his real motivation, which describes the kind of person he is at heart and where his true priorities lie. Study this page and the next one and compare them - there may be significant differences between the two, in which case "the inner Che Guevara" may not shine through and others may be in for so a few surprises once they get to know Che Guevara a little better. This page describes the disguise Ernesto de la Serna wears, his role in life, while the page about motivation talks about the real person beneath the disguise.
Che Guevara meets life head on and throws himself into new experiences with zest and enthusiasm. He is direct, straightforward, assertive, and usually completely aboveboard in all his dealings. Candid and incapable of guile, insincerity or phoniness, Che Guevara projects a confident and sometimes arrogant façade to others. He often lacks tact and sensitivity, and can be completely oblivious to others' needs, and inadvertently selfish. Ernesto de la Serna is self-reliant and does not depend upon social approval and reinforcement as much as other people do. He likes to be original and does not mind doing it alone. Che Guevara may feel that he does not fit into groups very well and that he does not naturally blend in and cooperate with others. He likes to be either a leader or a loner.
Ernesto de la Serna is a doer and thrives on freedom, challenge, and activity. He tends to think in clear, black and white terms, and to be somewhat simplistic in his outlook, which enables Che Guevara to act in a very decisive and self-assured manner. When inspired by an idea, Che Guevara feels such a sense of urgency and excitement about it that he will often forge ahead and try to implement it in a rather bold but poorly planned and crudely executed way. Patience and careful attention to details are not Ernesto de la Serna's forte. However, he never accepts defeat and will experience brilliant and unprecedented successes and discoveries, as well as painful failures. To Che Guevara it is far better to make mistakes than to play it safe and never try.
He is scornful of what he sees as weakness or passivity in others and also of the human tendency to imitate and follow. Che Guevara is not a follower. Others see Che Guevara as a strong individual and perhaps brash and brazen as well. Ernesto de la Serna presents a strong front to the world and generally does not allow others to see his vulnerable or insecure side.
Though often impatient, Che Guevara does have a great capacity for endurance. Ernesto de la Serna will dig in his heels and become very fixed and immovable once his course has been set. His stubborn self-reliance is so instinctive and ingrained that others find Che Guevara very difficult to sway at all.
Che Guevara radiates a sense of confidence, well-being, and optimism, which inspires trust and good feelings in others. He likes himself and it shows. He expects success in life and he generally achieves it. However, Ernesto de la Serna also tends to exaggerate or to overestimate himself, and he can be sloppy and careless when it comes to details.
There is an air of universal sympathy, gentleness, and nonjudgmental acceptance about Che Guevara which draws people in need to him. Because he has a good deal of intuitive insight or psychic perceptiveness, Che Guevara is able to say or do just the right thing for them. Che Guevara needs to beware of fostering dependency in those people, however.
