Carlo has two conflicting interests that he tries to resolve. As described in the previous chapter, he loves to nurture and support others, and family relationships are very important to Carrą. However, there is another side to Carlo Carrą: at heart he is a very independent person and he needs to participate in community endeavors and be involved with the world at large. Having a meaningful career and being involved in a larger circle of friends and associates is important to him as well. There are many ways to satisfy both of these sides. He may become an advocate for family needs or women's and children's issues in the workplace and in society as a whole. Or he may simply lend a personal, supportive, human touch to the impersonal atmosphere of business or academia. One negative possibility, however, is that he is may become very dogmatic about his own personal concerns and biases, not realizing how many of his social, political and even scientific views are rooted in personal experience rather than objective criteria.
He is a freedom-loving, strong-willed and independent-minded individual, and he insists upon living his own life as he sees fit, even if it means ignoring convention and tradition. In personal relationships, Carlo Carrą cannot be owned or possessed, and while he is willing to share himself with another, he does not always adjust easily to the emotional give and take of close relationships. Though intellectually open, Carrą can be enormously stubborn, opinionated and inflexible on a one-to-one level. Carlo has strong convictions and feelings about fairness and equality, and he tries to abide by them; however, his ideals about how people "should" treat one another do not always take into account human weaknesses, differences and needs. His strong points include his concern for human welfare and social betterment, his sense of fairness and democratic spirit, and his vision. His faults are his stubbornness and inflexibility, and a tendency to be very obtuse and insensitive when it comes to personal feelings and human needs.
World travel, foreign cultures, and studies which expand his intellectual horizons and broaden his understanding of the world are very attractive to Carrą.
Carlo Carrą has a philosophical turn of mind and is concerned with seeking answers to the big questions of life or getting the overview of any situation. Abstract concepts and/or plans for the future occupy his mind much of the time.
There is an ongoing, subtle conflict within Carlo Carrą, between his conscious attitudes and aspirations, and his deeper emotional and subconscious beliefs, needs, and feelings.
