Anna Freud approach to life and appearances
The following is a description of Anna's basic stance toward life, the way others see her, the way Anna Freud comes across, the face she shows to the world. In the page about motivation you will read about the inner Anna Freud - her real motivation, which describes the kind of person she is at heart and where her true priorities lie. Study this page and the next one and compare them - there may be significant differences between the two, in which case "the inner Anna Freud" may not shine through and others may be in for so a few surprises once they get to know Anna a little better. This page describes the disguise Freud wears, her role in life, while the page about motivation talks about the real person beneath the disguise.
Anna Freud has a sensible and realistic outlook on life and her two feet are always planted firmly on the ground (though she may, on occasion, have her head in the clouds). Others often see Freud as a rock of strength, solid, reliable, dependable, and constant. She is, in fact, amazingly consistent for she possesses great powers of endurance and does not like to make changes or adjustments to her regular routine. Anna does things deliberately and methodically and does not easily accommodate the unexpected. Though she has a gentle, even soft, appearance, Anna Freud is enormously strong-willed and stubborn. She follows her own pace and refuses to be rushed or pushed into anything before she feels sure about it. Freud can be coaxed and persuaded by charm, beauty, love or affection - but never forced. She will not fight either, but simply stubbornly resist any attempt at being coerced into doing something she does not want to do.
When Freud has a purpose, she is extremely fixed, immovable, and bullheaded about it. Her obstinacy is often infuriating to others, especially since it takes much provocation to make her flare up or respond to their anger. Anna Freud appears calm, unruffled, and unemotional most of the time, but behind her easygoing and peaceable appearance there lies great strength. When it comes to a contest of wills, Anna often wins simply due to her relentless persistence and her ability to outlast just about anyone. Another reason for her reluctance to make changes is her very strong need for security. Anna is most comfortable in stable, relatively unchanging conditions and she also has a strong desire for tangible security - a home of her own, money in the bank, job security, etc. The flip side of Freud's hankering for permanence is that she easily gets caught up in a rut and will stay in a familiar situation (e.g. job, marriage) long after it has lost its vitality and interest.
Anna Freud has a keen appreciation of the natural world and she derives great joy from the down-to-earth comforts of the physical world, with its myriad of delights. She is quite sensual in a very natural, wholesome way and she knows how to enjoy herself. Freud is appealing to the opposite sex in an earthy way. She is also a great lover of beauty and her tastes are basically conventional or classic - not modern.
She is highly verbal and communicative. Connecting with and talking to other people are key aspects of Anna's personality. Anna Freud may seem to be a busybody to others sometimes. She may also depend too much on other people's advice or feedback before making up her own mind, and Freud may thus appear to be indecisive.
She may be seen as someone who provokes conflict because Anna Freud likes to get everything out in the open and she generally does not avoid disagreeable issues. Her relationships with others may be characterized by a great deal of competition, anger, or friction as a result. Or, Freud may seem to run into more than her share of inconsiderate, pushy people. Learning to harness her energies into cooperative efforts and shared work is Freud's challenge.
Others may see Anna as a cool, reserved and unapproachable person, perhaps as a result of her conservative and stern upbringing. Anna Freud could feel that no one understands her and tends to isolate herself from others.
She is intellectually alive, curious and willing to learn. Intellectually competitive, Anna Freud is fond of debating with others and could have some stormy proceedings. Anna present her position skillfully, defends it ably and finds satisfaction in doing so.
