Verna Hull is actually a more sensitive, vulnerable and compassionate person than her proud and somewhat vain manner (described in the previous chapter) would suggest. Although she maintains a strong, confident facade, she is actually quite soft, understanding and caring.

At heart she is very gentle, impressionable and receptive - a dreamer. The world of her imagination, feelings, and intuition is as real to Verna Hull as anything in the outer world, though she may have trouble verbalizing or interpreting her inner experiences in a way others can understand. Verna Hull tends to struggle with how to assert her will and she gets what she wants in life in a way that she can feel good about. Verna Hull may also disapprove of her own anger, competitiveness, or aggressive impulses - and thus have difficulty accessing her personal power. Her comprehension is exceptional and Verna Hull reacts to everything very quickly. Hull shows deep respect for knowledge and feels that she must learn everything there is to know. Studying probably was encouraged early on and Verna Hull was raised to be successful.
