Although Theodore Roosevelt expresses himself in a lighthearted, friendly and open manner (as mentioned in the previous chapter), at heart he is much more emotionally complex and intense than he appears. Teddy harbors deeper feelings and a much "darker" side than is immediately apparent. He may be torn at times between keeping things light and playful versus exploring his own emotional depths and those of others. However, Roosevelt's light airy side and his deep, mysterious side can balance one another: he can verbalize, reflect upon and consciously understand, explain and elucidate his deepest feelings. Theodore Roosevelt is a natural researcher and he probably loves mystery stories. His sense of humor can be his saving grace when he gets too serious.

Quiet, deep, emotionally complex and intensely private, he is not a person who is easy to get to know and understand. Theodore Roosevelt is extremely sensitive but disinclined to show it, and he only allows a special few into his inner world. Like a wary animal, he is cautious and mistrustful of those he does not know until "he sniffs them out". He is highly instinctive and intuitive. Whatever he does, Teddy does with passion and fervor, and he often goes to extremes. Roosevelt can be hot or cold, but never lukewarm about anything. Roosevelt can also be very narrow-minded: either he is 100% involved in something or it does not exist for him at all. Rarely is Theodore Roosevelt emotionally detached and objective. He definitely has a fanatical streak. He is also immensely strong-willed and his tenacity in pursuing his objectives often borders on obsession. He is filled with fierce pride, courage and emotional strength.

Theodore Roosevelt loves mysteries and is deeply attracted to the hidden, dark, secret side of life. Teddy never takes things at face value and is always probing beneath the surface of people and situations to discover what is really going on. Theodore Roosevelt tends to be more of a cynic than an idealist.

Theodore Roosevelt has a very dramatic, creative, expressive nature and he loves to perform. Teddy enjoys being the center of attention and he seeks to shine, to excel, and to be outstanding in some unique way. He is very involved in his own creativity and self-expression, and takes great pleasure in developing and using his special talents, whether these are artistic, athletic, or intellectual. Theodore Roosevelt has a strong sense of pride.

Theodore Roosevelt tends to see things from his perspective only and to be rather subjective. He also enjoys talking and expressing his views but does not always listen as well. Theodore Roosevelt has a clear mind, a love of learning and new experiences, and he needs constant mental stimulation and activity.

At times Theodore Roosevelt may feel an uncontrollable urge to radically alter his direction in life, or to act in ways that seem eccentric or at least highly uncharacteristic of him. When his life is becoming too predictable, Teddy may do something to upset the status quo, sometimes without realizing why or how he is doing this. These impulses may seem at odds with his conscious intent and desires for himself, and can be unsettling. However, there is a streak of unconventionality and creative genius in Theodore Roosevelt which needs to be expressed now and then.

He is infused with a sense of personal destiny or mission and can be extremely driven, obsessed and fanatical. Learning about power and how to use it effectively is definitely on his agenda. Theodore Roosevelt confronts abusive power, tyranny and dominating people who will teach him about power and eventually force Roosevelt to claim his own.
