Although it may seem that he is just patiently plodding along, Ricky Wilson is actually quite shrewd and has a clear purpose in mind. He is far more astute and ambitious than his rather gentle, forbearing manner (described in the previous chapter) would suggest.
Serious, disciplined and quietly ambitious, he is driven to prove himself and to achieve material accomplishments and success. But true self-reliance and a solid sense of his own powers may well be the silver lining to that cloud in his life. Ricky Wilson needs to learn to follow his own creative impulses and heart's desires, regardless of what his critics or the authorities may say.
He may lack direction and drive and tends to compare himself unfavorably to others. Wilson alternates between caution and unrealistic expectations and lets others expect too much of him. But Ricky Wilson plods forward steadily, reaching success later in life.
