Behind Burton's forthright and candid manner described in the previous chapter, there is a very private, even secretive, person. He is more complex and keeps more inside than his direct, straightforward appearance would suggest.
Quiet, deep, emotionally complex and intensely private, he is not a person who is easy to get to know and understand. Richard Burton is extremely sensitive but disinclined to show it, and he only allows a special few into his inner world. Like a wary animal, he is cautious and mistrustful of those he does not know until "he sniffs them out". He is highly instinctive and intuitive.
