Although Tortelier may initially seem rational and emotionally detached (as mentioned in the previous chapter), people who know Paul well see a very sympathetic, feeling person, as described below. The depth of his sensitivity is masked somewhat by his independent or impersonal demeanor.

At heart he is very gentle, impressionable and receptive - a dreamer.
