Behind Love's rather lighthearted, witty and restless demeanor described in the previous chapter, lies a sensitive, poetic soul. Mike Love may cover up his sensitivity with light banter and cleverness - or he may use his verbal and communication skills to express his imagination, kindness and refined sensitivity.
At heart he is very gentle, impressionable and receptive - a dreamer. The world of his imagination, feelings, and intuition is as real to Mike Love as anything in the outer world, though he may have trouble verbalizing or interpreting his inner experiences in a way others can understand. Mystical, artistic, musical, emotional and imaginative, he has a rich inner life, though Love may seem rather unobtrusive and quiet outwardly. Mike Love usually keeps to himself.
Mike shows great sensitivity and empathy toward others and often senses things psychically or intuitively which prove to be correct. He is tolerant, forgiving and nonjudgmental, accepting people unconditionally regardless of their flaws, mistakes, or outward appearance. Mike has deep compassion for the suffering of any fellow creature and he often feels the pain of others as if it were his own. Mike Love sympathizes with the needy, the disadvantaged and the misfits of society. However, Love tends to give indiscriminately, to let others take advantage of his kindness, and to encourage the weak to remain so by becoming dependent upon him. Mike has little sense of boundaries, or of knowing when to say "no". Moderation and self-discipline are not his strong points.
He is a lover and a peacemaker rather than a fighter, and he tries to avoid open conflict. Love will patiently ignore or "tune out" problems and hope they will go away by themselves, rather than confront them directly and Love tends to lack the positive, fighting spirit that is sometimes necessary to overcome challenges. He is fluid, open, nonresistant and somewhat passive. Mike Love does things in a subtle, often covert, manner.
His gifts may also lie in the realm of the creative, artistic, or musical, for he possesses great sensitivity, inspiration and limitless imagination. Mike Love has a strong affinity for beauty and love.
His faults include a tendency to be lazy and negligent, and to wallow in self-pity rather than take strong, definite action to change his life for the better. He also tends to become so detached from his immediate environment that he lives in a disorderly, chaotic sort of hodgepodge, though this probably bothers those around Love more than it bothers him.
His career, reputation, and public image are very important to Love. Mike Love has a strong desire to be influential or make his mark on the world. The merely personal sphere does not satisfy him; his ambitions include making a major contribution and receiving broad recognition for his unique effort and gifts. Mike Love may undervalue the personal or inner side of life.
There is an ongoing, subtle conflict within Mike Love, between his conscious attitudes and aspirations, and his deeper emotional and subconscious beliefs, needs, and feelings. This creates considerable inner stress and sometimes paralyzing indecision, mostly due to the fact that Mike may be trying to follow a path that is at odds with his subconscious desires. Chronic tightness or tension in his body may well be a signal that Mike Love is denying or suppressing the messages from his subconscious or emotional self.
Ideally, Mike Love will learn to accept the two quite different aspects of his and to express both of them. If he cannot do this, Love is apt to attract many relationships into his life with people who reflect his denied or repressed qualities, and who seem to make his life difficult. He is an original! Mike Love radiates a sort of electrical excitement about the things he is interested in, and conveys this to others, but he also gets bored rather quickly. Mike does not mind being a bit unusual or breaking a few rules either.
Mike Love is extremely sensitive, compassionate and giving, often to his own detriment. His ideals and spiritual values motivate Mike Love, and he cannot live for personal gain or materialistic concerns alone. There must be an element of beauty, magic, imagination, inspiration or creativity in what he does. Otherwise Mike Love becomes listless and aimless. The arts, theater, music and/or charitable work are ideally suited to Mike.
