Maxim Gorky motivation
Behind Gorky's rather pragmatic, hardheaded exterior (mentioned in the previous chapter), he is an adventurer and a risk-taker at heart. His cool, conservative manner masks a much more fiery core.
He is a person who thrives on challenge, and he often feels that he must battle his way through life, relying on no one and nothing but his own strength, intelligence and courage. Maxim Gorky believes in being totally honest, true to himself and his own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are Gorky's gods, and he has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.
Maxim Gorky craves the freedom to do things in his own way, and he works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not his style. Maxim likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.
Maxim Gorky loves action and if others are settling down into a nice, comfortable little rut, then he is always ready to stir things up, do something new, make changes and introduce some fresh blood. Routine and sameness are tantamount to death for him. He is not afraid of trying something that has never been done before, and even though he may sometimes be perceived as a fool, Maxim Gorky also discovers, invents and initiates things that others will later emulate. Taking risks and following his own star are the breath of life for Gorky, and he wilts (or gets very frustrated and angry) if he cannot do this.
He is spontaneous, impulsive, direct, enthusiastic and assertive. Maxim Gorky believes in the power of positive thinking and positive action, and he perceives himself as a strong, even invincible, person. Maxim Gorky hates being ill or in a position of dependency. Accepting his own human limitations and emotional needs is often difficult for him.
He is basically aggressive in his attitudes and less adept at relating to others, picking up on subtle messages and nuances, listening, nurturing and harmonizing. He is often so fired up about his own projects or goals that he inadvertently runs over or ignores other people's feelings and interests. Being receptive and appreciative of others' contributions, ideas and feelings would be highly instrumental in improving Gorky's relationships. His impatience to get on with things causes Maxim Gorky to be rather insensitive, thereby alienating others unnecessarily. He also frequently tries to accomplish his goals through anger or temper tantrums. Maxim Gorky would gain much by learning to slow down, relax and sometimes just let things be, however his energetic, restless nature rarely allows Maxim Gorky to do so.
Ownership gives Maxim Gorky a sense of security, and he has a strong attachment to his possessions. Maxim also has a natural instinct for or understanding of economics, finance, trade, and appraising the value of merchandise.
Realistic and practical, Maxim Gorky sets goals for himself that are modest enough for him to actually achieve. He is able to tackle long, difficult projects and see them through, for Gorky possesses self-discipline, concentration and perseverance. Maxim Gorky also has a strong sense of responsibility and is very conscientious about fulfilling his obligations. Gorky often does things because he feels it is expected of him.
Although he takes himself and his responsibilities seriously, there is also a part of Maxim Gorky that rebels against rules and restrictions and the need to contend with outside authority. Gorky can feel torn between conforming to the rules or fulfilling his obligations, and breaking free of them. His wilder side will now be described.
Impulsive, restless and spontaneous, his life is apt to be somewhat unstable and full of sudden changes. Maxim Gorky is extremely independent and craves excitement, adventure, freedom and discovery. Gorky has a rebellious streak and he often feels he is unusual and different from society's mainstream. The unorthodox and the novel appeal to him.
While he is realistic and conscientious (or overly conscientious), as described above, Maxim Gorky also has an otherworldly, dreamy, or mystically-inclined side, as described below.
Sensitive and imaginative, he is attracted to artistic and creative pursuits and to mysticism. Maxim Gorky is impressionable and receptive, and often has experiences that are unusual and unexplainable by the rational mind. Maxim has an abundance of dreams, visions and longings, but does not always have the concentrated will and stamina to make them materialize. Gentle, idealistic and peace loving, Maxim often seeks to avoid the harsh realities of life. Maxim has an ethereal quality about him.
