When reading the previous chapter and this one, Max Baer, Jr. will notice that there are some significant differences between how he comes across to others and how he is at heart. His warm, supportive, nurturing side, described in the previous chapter, can conflict with his freedom-loving side, which is described below. In short, he may feel torn between taking care of others and "flying free". Max Baer, Jr. must maintain a balance so that he has enough time and freedom to explore, travel and play. Striving for this balance is an endless challenge for Baer. As kind and sympathetic as he is, there are limits to the amount of time and energy he can dedicate to taking care of other people. Those who really know Max understand that he is an adventurer at heart, and personal commitments (especially when others depend on him) easily become burdensome.

He is a gambler and an adventurer at heart, one who loves to take risks, to discover and explore new worlds, and to travel the untried path rather than the safe, reliable one. He is independent, freedom loving, and often very restless. He needs a lifestyle that provides opportunities for travel, movement, change, and meeting new people. A steady routine, which offers much in the way of security but little in the way of space and freedom, is odious to him.

Max Baer, Jr. enjoys being in close relationships but also needs freedom and he does not do well with a possessive, clinging, or emotionally demanding partner. He is quite generous, and heartily dislikes pettiness in others. Someone who shares his ideals, his sense of fun and his zest for life would be the right companion for Baer.

His energies are directed toward either honing his professional techniques, skills and abilities or "perfecting", refining, and improving himself as a person. Critical analysis and attention to minute detail are intrinsic in either process. Max Baer, Jr. is highly motivated to strive for a state of wholeness or optimal functioning and he is quite a perfectionist!

Baer can easily become overly identified or involved with the task he performs, with his work, or with his own health and "growth process".

At times Max Baer, Jr. may feel an uncontrollable urge to radically alter his direction in life or to act in ways that seem eccentric or at least highly atypical. When his life becomes too predictable, Max may do something to upset the status quo, sometimes without realizing why or how he is doing it. These impulses may seem at odds with his conscious intent and desires for himself, and can be unsettling. However, there is a streak of unconventionality and creative genius in Max Baer, Jr. that needs to be expressed now and then.
