Dietrich's quiet, unassuming, rather modest facade (described in the previous chapter) is liable to mask certain far less modest goals and ambitions in life. Materially (or in other ways), she is much more aspiring than she may seem, and reaching the top academically or professionally is really important to her.

Serious, disciplined and quietly ambitious, she is driven to prove herself and to achieve material accomplishments and success. Her work, her position in the world, and her contributions to society are very important to Dietrich.
