Although Luis Miguel appears gentle and sympathetic toward others (as explained in the previous chapter), he is also a "warrior". Basteri sometimes feels torn between these two facets of his character: the sensitive, tenderhearted, home-loving side, and the assertive, competitive, risk-taking side. People who first meet Luis Miguel often think that he is a "softy", but later find out that he is strong willed and pursues his goals aggressively.

He is a person who thrives on challenge, and he often feels that he must battle his way through life, relying on no one and nothing but his own strength, intelligence and courage. Luis Miguel believes in being totally honest, true to himself and his own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are Basteri's gods, and he has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.

Luis Miguel craves the freedom to do things in his own way, and he works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not his style. Luis Miguel likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.

Luis Miguel loves action and if others are settling down into a nice, comfortable little rut, then he is always ready to stir things up, do something new, make changes and introduce some fresh blood. Routine and sameness are tantamount to death for him. He is not afraid of trying something that has never been done before, and even though he may sometimes be perceived as a fool, Luis Miguel also discovers, invents and initiates things that others will later emulate. Taking risks and following his own star are the breath of life for Basteri, and he wilts (or gets very frustrated and angry) if he cannot do this.

He is spontaneous, impulsive, direct, enthusiastic and assertive. Luis Miguel believes in the power of positive thinking and positive action, and he perceives himself as a strong, even invincible, person. Luis Miguel hates being ill or in a position of dependency. His impatience to get on with things causes Luis Miguel to be rather insensitive, thereby alienating others unnecessarily. He also frequently tries to accomplish his goals through anger or temper tantrums. Luis Miguel would gain much by learning to slow down, relax and sometimes just let things be, however his energetic, restless nature rarely allows Luis Miguel to do so.

His career, reputation, and public image are very important to Basteri. Luis Miguel has a strong desire to be influential or make his mark on the world. The merely personal sphere does not satisfy him; his ambitions include making a major contribution and receiving broad recognition for his unique effort and gifts. Luis Miguel may undervalue the personal or inner side of life.

Luis Miguel aims high, dreams big, and has a tremendous sense of what he is capable of achieving. Overconfidence, grandiosity, lack of humility and/or extreme discontent in modest circumstances may be his faults. Generally, however, Basteri's great expectations and enterprising spirit lead to success. Business, especially when there is an element of risk and speculation involved, is ideally suited to Luis Miguel.

Luis Miguel tends to be very impressionable and psychically open, and as a youngster, he could have been dominated in his relationships with more forceful personalities. Afraid of confrontation, Basteri may have become passive, identified himself as a helpless victim, or tried to gain his desires in underhanded ways.

Luis Miguel's hypersensitivity to his environment is apt to be a challenge for him in other ways as well. Pollutants, ugliness, or dissonance in any form is apt to affect Luis Miguel more than most people.

Luis Miguel has a sensitive physique, is impressionable and prone to external influences. Luis Miguel should guard against the tendency to escape through drugs, alcohol etc. His imagination is very vivid and Basteri is likely to dream of big things.
