John Astin motivation
Although John Astin appears gentle and sympathetic toward others (as explained in the previous chapter), he is also a "warrior". Astin sometimes feels torn between these two facets of his character: the sensitive, tenderhearted, home-loving side, and the assertive, competitive, risk-taking side. People who first meet John Astin often think that he is a "softy", but later find out that he is strong willed and pursues his goals aggressively.
He is a person who thrives on challenge, and he often feels that he must battle his way through life, relying on no one and nothing but his own strength, intelligence and courage. John Astin believes in being totally honest, true to himself and his own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are Astin's gods, and he has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.
John Astin craves the freedom to do things in his own way, and he works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not his style. John likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.
John Astin loves action and if others are settling down into a nice, comfortable little rut, then he is always ready to stir things up, do something new, make changes and introduce some fresh blood. Routine and sameness are tantamount to death for him. He is not afraid of trying something that has never been done before, and even though he may sometimes be perceived as a fool, John Astin also discovers, invents and initiates things that others will later emulate. Taking risks and following his own star are the breath of life for Astin, and he wilts (or gets very frustrated and angry) if he cannot do this.
He is spontaneous, impulsive, direct, enthusiastic and assertive. John Astin believes in the power of positive thinking and positive action, and he perceives himself as a strong, even invincible, person. John Astin hates being ill or in a position of dependency. Accepting his own human limitations and emotional needs is often difficult for him.
He is basically aggressive in his attitudes and less adept at relating to others, picking up on subtle messages and nuances, listening, nurturing and harmonizing. He is often so fired up about his own projects or goals that he inadvertently runs over or ignores other people's feelings and interests. Being receptive and appreciative of others' contributions, ideas and feelings would be highly instrumental in improving Astin's relationships. His impatience to get on with things causes John Astin to be rather insensitive, thereby alienating others unnecessarily. He also frequently tries to accomplish his goals through anger or temper tantrums. John Astin would gain much by learning to slow down, relax and sometimes just let things be, however his energetic, restless nature rarely allows John Astin to do so.
His career, reputation and public image are very important to Astin. John Astin has a strong desire to be influential or make his mark on the world. He is not satisfied with the personal sphere alone; his ambitions include making a major contribution and receiving broad recognition for his unique effort and gifts. John Astin may undervalue the personal or inner facet of life.
The above description of John Astin is so deeply ingrained that he has little objectivity and often little appreciation for other, different ways of approaching life. John Astin tends to be one-sided. There is little ambiguity in his makeup and he generally knows what he wants and what will make him happy.
John Astin tends to see things from his perspective only and to be rather subjective. He also enjoys talking and expressing his views but does not always listen as well. John Astin has a clear mind, a love of learning and new experiences, and he needs constant mental stimulation and activity.
His life is apt to be blessed with more than his share of helpful friends, fortuitous relationships, and doors opening up to him at just the right time. Because John Astin is usually willing to share and to give back to others in a generous way, he continues to generate success in his life no matter how unfortunate prevailing circumstances are. John should beware, however, of becoming an opportunist.
However he also has a more somber side, which keeps Astin's optimism from becoming ungrounded or overblown. John Astin tends to seesaw between his faith, vision and high aspirations, and his caution and realism (or fear!). He cannot and does not rely on good luck or grace alone, and he accepts the need for hard work. His skeptical or "somber" side is described below.
He is often plagued by feelings of personal inadequacy, inhibitions and self-doubt. John Astin has a cautious, realistic attitude toward life and is highly responsible and disciplined with regard to his obligations and duties. John Astin tends to work and struggle more than necessary and to take himself too seriously.
Although he takes himself and his responsibilities seriously, there is also a part of John Astin that rebels against rules and restrictions and the need to contend with outside authority. Astin can feel torn between conforming to the rules or fulfilling his obligations, and breaking free of them. His wilder side will now be described.
Innovative, original, unorthodox and unconventional, he identifies with the role of a rebel, reformer or iconoclast. John Astin insists upon a great deal of personal freedom and does not easily adapt to others' needs and wishes. John needs a lifestyle that allows him to be spontaneous. He often feels that he is somehow different from other people and outside of society's mainstream.
His emotions are in tune with his intentions and John Astin goes about his business with complete oneness. John Astin has a positive attitude towards life and a high spirit of enterprise. There could be a strong tie between John and his mother or his wife.
He may be a bit high-strung and over-zealous in the pursuit of his endeavors. Astin always seems to be in a hurry and has the ability to evaluate situations quickly. John Astin has a brilliant mind and possibly could invent something.
John Astin seems to have an emotional and physical unrest and he always have to be on the move. John could find it difficult to control himself and he tends to get angry and upset easily. Eccentric and individualistic, he can create a stir wherever he goes.
