Though Joplin appears somewhat unconventional or liberal in her approach to life (as mentioned in the previous chapter), she also has a very down to earth, practical, and rather conservative side. She is more attached to tradition and respectful of the ways of the past than she might let on. Balancing, or reconciling between the old and the new is a constant struggle for Joplin.
