Hayley Mills motivation
Behind Mills' upbeat, friendly, open manner (described in the previous chapter), there is a very competitive, me-first, play-to-win sort of person.
She is a person who thrives on challenge, and she often feels that she must battle her way through life, relying on no one and nothing but her own strength, intelligence and courage. Hayley Mills believes in being totally honest, true to herself and her own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are Mills' gods, and she has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.
Hayley Mills craves the freedom to do things in her own way, and she works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not her style. Hayley likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.
Hayley Mills loves action and if others are settling down into a nice, comfortable little rut, then she is always ready to stir things up, do something new, make changes and introduce some fresh blood. Routine and sameness are tantamount to death for her. She is not afraid of trying something that has never been done before, and even though she may sometimes be perceived as a fool, Hayley Mills also discovers, invents and initiates things that others will later emulate. Taking risks and following her own star are the breath of life for Mills, and she wilts (or gets very frustrated and angry) if she cannot do this.
She is spontaneous, impulsive, direct, enthusiastic and assertive. Hayley Mills believes in the power of positive thinking and positive action, and she perceives herself as a strong, even invincible, person. Hayley Mills hates being ill or in a position of dependency. Accepting her own human limitations and emotional needs is often difficult for her.
She is basically aggressive in her attitudes and less adept at relating to others, picking up on subtle messages and nuances, listening, nurturing and harmonizing. She is often so fired up about her own projects or goals that she inadvertently runs over or ignores other people's feelings and interests. Being receptive and appreciative of others' contributions, ideas and feelings would be highly instrumental in improving Mills' relationships. Her impatience to get on with things causes Hayley Mills to be rather insensitive, thereby alienating others unnecessarily. She also frequently tries to accomplish her goals through anger or temper tantrums. Hayley Mills would gain much by learning to slow down, relax and sometimes just let things be, however her energetic, restless nature rarely allows Hayley Mills to do so.
She is a private person and inclined to withdraw in very public and impersonal social settings. Hayley Mills prefers to work at home or in a very personal small business.
Mills invests a lot of her creative energy into her home, family relationships, and inner life.
There is an ongoing, subtle conflict within Hayley Mills between her conscious attitudes and aspirations and her deeper emotional and subconscious beliefs, needs and feelings. This creates considerable inner stress and sometimes paralyzing indecision, mostly due to the fact that Hayley may be trying to follow a path that is at odds with her subconscious desires. Chronic tightness or tension in her body may well be a signal that Hayley Mills is denying or suppressing the messages from her subconscious or emotional self.
Ideally, Hayley Mills will learn to accept and express these two different sides of herself. Should she fail to do so, Mills is likely to be drawn into many relationships with people who reflect her denied or repressed qualities and seem to make her life difficult. (Also read chapter 4 in order to get a better picture of the duality described here.)
She is direct, energetic, sometimes aggressive and combative. Hayley Mills often feels that she needs to fight to get what she wants, and she tends to have a "me-first" attitude that angers or irritates others. She is hasty, restless, impatient and sometimes reckless.
