Harvey Milk motivation
Although he has lofty ideals and is high-minded in many ways (as mentioned in the previous chapter), there is a side of Harvey Milk that is sly, funny, and really cannot take anything too seriously. His sense of humor saves Milk from becoming overly earnest about himself or the things he believes in.
Harvey Milk is, in many ways, an eternal child. His mind is bright, alert, curious, flexible, playful and always eager for new experiences - and his attention span is often quite brief. Milk grasps ideas quickly and once his initial curiosity has been satisfied, he is ready to move on. Harvey Milk craves frequent change and variety, as well as new situations and people.
It may be hard for Harvey Milk to decide just where his talents and true vocation lie, for he has a multitude of interests and is loathe limiting himself by concentrating on just one. He is easily distracted by all of the other fascinating possibilities. His curiosity and restlessness propel Harvey toward many different experiences in life, and he is willing to taste or try anything once. Doing the same thing over and over again, even if it is something he does well, is tantamount to drudgery for Milk.
Harvey Milk lives in his head a great deal - reading, observing, thinking, spinning ideas around - and he needs mental stimulation every bit as much as he needs food and drink. In fact, if Harvey had to choose between a good book or movie and a good lunch, he would very likely choose the former. Harvey Milk has a creative mind and he often lives by his wits.
He is also a very social creature, with a strong need to communicate and interact with people. He enjoys using and playing with words and has a real flair for getting his ideas across in a clever, interesting, articulate manner. Writing and/or speaking are areas he has talent for.
Harvey Milk also has a rather lighthearted and mischievous sense of humor, and often does not take anything too seriously. Though he craves emotional involvement, it is hard for Harvey Milk to achieve it, for he is frequently unwilling to commit himself to anything, to take responsibility or to limit his personal freedom and mobility.
His happiness lies in using his creativity and language skills to communicate something meaningful, teach, inspire, or bring people together. Harvey has an unbiased mind and can usually offer a fresh, clear, uncluttered perspective. His faults are his lack of constancy and persistence, and his tendency to overlook or ignore deep emotional issues and other people's feelings.
The urge to learn and to communicate is essential to Harvey Milk, and he expresses himself very well through writing, teaching or sharing ideas and information. Milk is persuasive and fluent with language.
Restless and inquisitive, Harvey enjoys being mobile and taking short trips and excursions in order to see for himself what is going on in the world around him.
Harvey Milk tends to see things from his perspective only and to be rather subjective. He also enjoys talking and expressing his views but does not always listen as well. Harvey Milk has a clear mind, a love of learning and new experiences, and he needs constant mental stimulation and activity.
Harvey is extremely sensitive and imaginative, and he can get lost in his dreams, fantasies and visions. He is attracted to artistic and creative pursuits, as well as to the world of color, beauty, and emotion. Harvey Milk is also drawn to mysticism and he has deep spiritual aspirations and yearnings. Gentle and peace loving, Milk may lack the will and competitive spirit needed to make his way in the world. He is often impractical and may seek to avoid or escape the harsh realities of life.
He is polite and gallant and makes a special effort to meet others half-way. Harvey Milk has the ability to give and receive love. Nurturing friendships, personal love relationships and social life is important to him.
Harvey Milk has a great desire for freedom and independence and is subject to strong emotional tensions. He is very creative and forges ahead tirelessly. But Milk tends to make the highest demands on his physical energy and is prone to over-stimulate his nerves.
