Harvey Milk challenges and difficulties
Harvey Milk has a great capacity for self-denial in the pursuit of a long-range goal. Harvey is capable of hard work and persistent labor, but he may lack joyfulness and the ability to play. Harvey Milk often feels burdened by life's demands and responsibilities, and may envy those who seem to attract what they want in life without a great deal of personal effort.
There is a very judgmental, stern, and uncompromising side of Milk's which may inhibit him a great deal. Harvey Milk must avoid becoming heavy and cynical, or becoming a rather callous, sophisticated adult whose practicality and realism squeeze out the playful, imaginative side of life.
Milk is generally not a "joiner" and he does not feel comfortable in clubs, organizations or other groups of people that are centered on some common ideal or interest. If Harvey Milk does participate in a group, he may find the rules and procedures restrictive - or he may simply feel that he does not fit in with the others.
Being alone or with older, more experienced people suits Harvey Milk better than being with groups of his own peers.
Harvey Milk becomes tense and upset rather easily. He becomes irritated by the unwillingness of others to make changes. In his eagerness to see his inspirations materialize, Milk is inclined to forego tact and diplomacy in favor of achieving his goals. His occasional outbreaks of brusque, insensitive behavior often do more harm than good.
Now we will discuss patterns of behavior which Harvey Milk instinctively and habitually reverts to when under stress - a mostly subconscious process that he is apt to over indulge in because it is so familiar and hence easy for him. The direction Harvey Milk needs to follow in order to develop balance, greater awareness, and wholeness is also described.
Harvey Milk benefits by becoming more aware of the rhythm of the seasons and the natural world, learning to slow down and allow life to unfold in its own time. Nurturing a garden, a child, or some other living, growing thing gives Harvey Milk a sense of inner balance.
Harvey Milk has a tendency to be deeply suspicious, to not take anything at face value and to see hidden agendas and dark motives even where none exist! Life does not have to be a constant conflict... Harvey needs to learn to accept things as they are.
Milk also needs to develop patience, peace and stability by grounding himself in his daily work and behaving consistently and reliably towards others.
It is in his dealings with money, financial security, tangible assets and possessions that he is most likely to wrestle with these issues. The qualities described above are ones Harvey Milk needs to integrate in tangible ways: how he makes a living, building assets and a secure material base, what he does with the resources he has. Harvey Milk should try to avoid over involvement or entanglements with other people's money matters, legal business, and personal affairs.
