His apparent gentleness and noncompetitive stance toward life (described in the previous chapter) may be very deceiving because at heart he is a "warrior". Harold Stassen may feel at odds with himself, sometimes being very passive or benevolent, and at other times, very assertive and concerned primarily with himself. Both qualities are intrinsic to Harold's nature.

He is a person who thrives on challenge, and he often feels that he must battle his way through life, relying on no one and nothing but his own strength, intelligence and courage. Harold Stassen believes in being totally honest, true to himself and his own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are Stassen's gods, and he has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.

Harold Stassen craves the freedom to do things in his own way, and he works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not his style. Harold likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.

Harold Stassen would gain much by learning to slow down, relax and sometimes just let things be, however his energetic, restless nature rarely allows Harold Stassen to do so.

Assertive and self-motivated, Stassen can be a leader - one whom others look to for direction - but he competes and often clashes with other strong individuals. Harold Stassen undergoes deep, transformative changes in his life with relative ease and a minimum of conscious resistance. Because he does not avoid the depths, Stassen has access to a lot of personal power and strength. Without realizing it or seeking it, Harold is apt to have quite a potent effect on the people he comes into contact with, even superficially.
