Behind Marx's rather cool, conservative, somewhat impersonal and businesslike demeanor (as described on the previous page), he is much more passionate and emotional. Gummo Marx often conceals his vulnerability beneath a veneer of toughness or indifference.

Quiet, deep, emotionally complex and intensely private, he is not a person who is easy to get to know and understand. Gummo Marx is extremely sensitive but disinclined to show it, and he only allows a special few into his inner world. Like a wary animal, he is cautious and mistrustful of those he does not know until "he sniffs them out". He is highly instinctive and intuitive. Gummo Marx usually has a strong, immediate gut reaction to people, even though he may be unable to clearly articulate why he feels the way he does. His feelings and perceptions go deeper than words.

Gummo Marx also has a powerful need for deep emotional relationships and he forms very intense love bonds and attachments. He is possessive and often jealous of anyone or anything that he perceives as a threat to his relationship with someone he loves. When Gummo Marx commits himself to someone or something, he is wholeheartedly devoted and expects complete loyalty in return. Gummo merges with or "marries" the person he loves at a very deep level and therefore separations are extremely painful for him, and often stormy and nasty. When Marx has been wounded, he is not inclined to turn the other cheek and will retaliate if at all possible. Gummo will most certainly never forget the hurt and he often harbors grievances and resentment for a very long time. Forgiveness does not come easily to him.

Whatever he does, Gummo does with passion and fervor, and he often goes to extremes. Marx can be hot or cold, but never lukewarm about anything. Marx can also be very narrow-minded: either he is 100% involved in something or it does not exist for him at all. Rarely is Gummo Marx emotionally detached and objective. He definitely has a fanatical streak. He is also immensely strong-willed and his tenacity in pursuing his objectives often borders on obsession. He is filled with fierce pride, courage and emotional strength.

Gummo Marx loves mysteries and is deeply attracted to the hidden, dark, secret side of life. Gummo never takes things at face value and is always probing beneath the surface of people and situations to discover what is really going on. Gummo Marx tends to be more of a cynic than an idealist.

World travel, foreign cultures, and studies which expand his intellectual horizons and broaden his understanding of the world are very attractive to Marx.

Gummo Marx has a philosophical turn of mind and is concerned with seeking answers to the big questions of life or getting the overview of any situation. Abstract concepts and/or plans for the future occupy his mind much of the time.

Marx occasionally gamble, splurge, or overextend himself in ways that may be quite at odds with his usual way of doing things. Exaggerating his accomplishments or spending too much in order to impress others and build up his own self-esteem can be a problem. However, Gummo Marx also has faith and an optimistic side, which enable him to recover from the negative consequences of his excesses, and to learn from them.
