Friedrich Engels' fundamental needs, values, and orientation towards life are symbolized by the four astrological elements. Each person has their own unique balance of these four basic energies: fire (warmth, inspiration, enthusiasm), earth (practicality, realism, material interests), air (social and intellectual qualities), and water (emotional needs and feelings).
Engels' "elemental make-up" is described below. Remember that most people are "unbalanced" or lopsided, and if Friedrich is lacking or deficient in a certain element (or elements), it simply means that he needs to consciously develop that particular aspect in order to appreciate and/or work harder in that dimension of life.
Sometimes we overestimate the element that we are least endowed with, sensing it as a lack within ourselves, but more often we neglect or ignore it. The qualities described below will be reiterated and explained in more detail in the following pages.
Engels prizes personal independence and autonomy so much that he is apt to downplay his need for closeness and caring. While Friedrich Engels expresses indignation, anger, excitement or enthusiasm rather freely, he hides his feelings of sadness or inadequacy. He may dismiss his own feelings and those of others as insignificant. It is hard for Engels to let others know when he is hurting and needs their support, because he feels that they will not respect him if he reveals this sort of vulnerability.
Striving to be (and often believing himself to be) emotionally self-sufficient limits Friedrich's ability to be truly intimate with others and to get the nurturing he needs. Friedrich Engels is also often rather insensitive to how his behavior affects others.
