Though he may appear unconventional and liberal in this thinking (as mentioned in the previous chapter), he also has a rather conservative, grounded, practical nature, as described below. He may feel torn at times between maintaining the status quo, versus creating controversy and making waves.

His practical nature gives Edward R. Murrow the capacity to be very successful in business. Sometimes, however, Murrow holds to his own views too obstinately and dogmatically, causing him to limit his possibilities and overlook opportunities.

He is a steadfast and patient soul, capable of tremendous devotion, dedication, endurance and constancy. The ability to follow through and stick with things is one of his greatest assets. Once Murrow's course is set, he pursues it tenaciously until it is completed, stubbornly resisting any attempts to sway him from his purpose.

Edward R. Murrow has a very practical nature; he wants to see concrete, tangible results for his efforts, and he is not one to concoct wild dreams that are unlikely to come into fruition. Murrow usually maintains his poise and equanimity. Edward R. Murrow also has an innate sense of harmony with nature, allowing things to grow and unfold in their own time and the patience to nurture something into being - be it a garden, a child, or a creative project. Ed has three major faults: one is his bullheaded obstinacy. The second is his unwillingness to deviate from his safe, predictable routine. And the third is Murrow's tendency to always insist upon realism and undervalue the imaginative, speculative, and fanciful - in other words, Edward R. Murrow lacks the ability to play with ideas and possibilities, and to open his mind to new horizons.

The urge to learn and communicate is essential to Edward R. Murrow, and he expresses himself very well through writing, teaching or sharing ideas and information. Murrow is persuasive and fluent with language.

Restless and inquisitive, Ed enjoys being mobile and taking short trips and excursions in order to see for himself what is going on in the world around him.

Ed has big aspirations and the desire to succeed in life in a grand way. Edward R. Murrow tends to exaggerate, promise more than is feasible and misjudge by being overly optimistic. However, he never gives up on his hopes for the future. Murrow tends to be restless and discontent with the responsibilities and limitations of life.

Emotionally, it could be difficult for Edward R. Murrow to discern illusion from reality. He is impressionable and sympathetic toward others. However, Murrow tends to idealize others and could adopt a fantasy view of a wonderful marriage, causing disappointment later on.
