His apparent gentleness and noncompetitive stance toward life (described in the previous chapter) may be very deceiving because at heart he is a "warrior". Edmund Muskie may feel at odds with himself, sometimes being very passive or benevolent, and at other times, very assertive and concerned primarily with himself. Both qualities are intrinsic to Ed's nature.

He is a person who thrives on challenge, and he often feels that he must battle his way through life, relying on no one and nothing but his own strength, intelligence and courage. Edmund Muskie believes in being totally honest, true to himself and his own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are Muskie's gods, and he has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.

Edmund Muskie craves the freedom to do things in his own way, and he works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not his style. Ed likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.

His impatience to get on with things causes Edmund Muskie to be rather insensitive, thereby alienating others unnecessarily. He also frequently tries to accomplish his goals through anger or temper tantrums. Edmund Muskie would gain much by learning to slow down, relax and sometimes just let things be, however his energetic, restless nature rarely allows Edmund Muskie to do so.

Edmund Muskie has a clear sense of his own self and he therefore conveys a strong impression to others of who he is and what he wants. Assertive and self-motivated, Muskie can be a leader - one whom others look to for direction - but he competes and often clashes with other strong individuals. Edmund Muskie feels a need to be in control of his own life and he can be too self-involved, too immersed in his own interests, and oblivious to others at times.

He is an original! Edmund Muskie radiates a sort of electrical excitement about the things he is interested in, and conveys this to others, but he also gets bored rather quickly. Ed does not mind being a bit unusual or breaking a few rules either.

Edmund Muskie has a strong need to be with people whom he is emotionally close to. He is very sensitive to others emotional needs, lending a sympathetic ear to their problems. Peace and harmony in his personal surrounding and relationships are very important to Muskie.
