Behind Duke's rather jovial, open, enthusiastic demeanor (as described on the previous page), there is a very different side to her - deeper, more serious, and more emotionally intense, as described below. Her optimism and idealism are tempered and balanced by a certain skepticism and a sense of the darker side of life and of people.

Quiet, deep, emotionally complex and intensely private, she is not a person who is easy to get to know and understand. Doris Duke is extremely sensitive but disinclined to show it, and she only allows a special few into her inner world. Like a wary animal, she is cautious and mistrustful of those she does not know until "he sniffs them out". She is highly instinctive and intuitive. She is prone to fanaticism and cannot go halfway in anything she does. Her extremism may seem (and actually be) obsessive and somewhat blind. That is, Doris Duke does not always consciously understand why she feels as driven or intense about a given course of action as she does. There is a strong element of fate or inevitability in Duke's life. A significant death or loss in her close relationships is likely to profoundly influence Doris Duke and shape important life decisions and she may consciously seek out intense, life-or-death experiences as well.

Her emotions are very intense and Doris Duke is excited quite easily. Love is very important to her and she is constantly seeking emotional fulfillment, but she will not waste time with casual relationships.

She is a bit impulsive and excitable and wants things done quickly. Doris Duke tends to be very impatient with anyone who is slower or less energetic than she is. Duke will fight for what she wants but should guard against mishaps or accidents.
