Behind Gephardt's proud and rather self-centered manner (described in the previous chapter), he is a thoughtful person concerned with social issues. He is very sensitive to the ways in which economic, social and cultural issues affect individuals. In his own life Dick Gephardt struggles to find ways to advance himself while also contributing something valuable to his community. Gephardt must not be content with simply blaming society for his problems or others' problems, but rather become active in creatively finding ways to solve these problems.
