Although Slayton may initially seem rational and emotionally detached (as mentioned in the previous chapter), people who know Deke well see a very sympathetic, feeling person, as described below. The depth of his sensitivity is masked somewhat by his independent or impersonal demeanor.

At heart he is very gentle, impressionable and receptive - a dreamer. The world of his imagination, feelings, and intuition is as real to Deke Slayton as anything in the outer world, though he may have trouble verbalizing or interpreting his inner experiences in a way others can understand.
