Charles has two very different sides to him. Sometimes he is the playful, curious child described in the previous chapter while at others he is the serious, detached adult. Few people can vacillate between these two extremes to the extent that Charles does. In fact his detachment and objectivity is evident even when he is joking. If he loses touch with his lighter, playful side (possibly in later life), Charlie Pierce will become increasingly bitter and cynical. His deeply conservative nature (discussed below) holds his restlessness in check, and he is actually less willing to bend than one would imagine based on his initial appearance.

Serious, disciplined and quietly ambitious, he is driven to prove himself and to achieve material accomplishments and success. His work, his position in the world, and his contributions to society are very important to Pierce. Charlie Pierce will persevere through enormous hardship and frustration in order to reach a goal he has set for himself, and he often sacrifices much in the area of personal relationships and home life in order to do so.

Charlie Pierce has a thoughtful, quiet and self-contained disposition and does not readily show his inner feelings and needs. Charlie Pierce seems to always be in control, capable, efficient and strong. He is often the person in the family or group who is given more responsibility (and more work) than the others. He is highly conscientious and even as a child he possessed great maturity, soberness, and worldly wisdom.

He is basically a pragmatic realist, and though he may have all sorts of dreams, ideals and colorful theories, he feels that the ultimate test of a concept is its practical usefulness. Charles has an innate shrewdness and business sense, and there is a bit of the cynic in him as well.

He is clear-headed, detached and objective, and is not swayed by emotional dramatics. He is often authoritarian - strictly fair, but without mercy. Charlie Pierce has a great respect for tradition and even if he does not agree with certain laws, he will abide by them or strive to change them, but never flagrantly disregard them. Cautious and conservative, Charlie Pierce plays by the rules.

He is subtle, understated, quiet, deep, not easy to get to know intimately, and never superficial. He is a modest person and sometimes overly self-critical. Giving himself (and others) permission to feel, play, be spontaneous and silly, and sometimes weak and vulnerable is not easy for Pierce.

Pierce's strong points are his depth and thoroughness, patience, tenacity and faithfulness. His faults are a tendency to be rigid and inflexible, and too serious.

Charlie Pierce invests a tremendous amount of his creative energy into his relationships with others, particularly his marriage or other close partnerships. Charles feels that he needs others in order to be all that he can be, and he is disinclined to solitary activities and endeavors.

Working with people on a one-to-one basis to bring about mutual understanding, harmony, and satisfaction is an area in which Charlie Pierce can really excel. Counseling or negotiating are talents of his.

Pierce can be an inspiring leader of a team or group effort. His dynamism and energy evokes the same in others, and he sees healthy competition between people as a plus. Generally, Charlie Pierce enjoys fine health as well.

While Charlie Pierce does have a strong drive, he frequently holds himself back. One of his challenges lies in learning to endure frustration and to patiently overcome the obstacles in his life (or his own internal caution and resistance!).

Charlie Pierce has a healthy amount of self-control and self-discipline. Pierce also radiates a rather responsible, trustworthy, solid feeling about himself which will win him the confidence of others, especially his superiors.

His comprehension is exceptional and Charlie Pierce reacts to everything very quickly. Pierce shows deep respect for knowledge and feels that he must learn everything there is to know. Studying probably was encouraged early on and Charlie Pierce was raised to be successful.
