Carl Sagan's fundamental needs, values, and orientation towards life are symbolized by the four astrological elements. Each person has their own unique balance of these four basic energies: fire (warmth, inspiration, enthusiasm), earth (practicality, realism, material interests), air (social and intellectual qualities), and water (emotional needs and feelings).

Though he may sympathize or feel for others, Carl may in fact not really understand where they are coming from. Carl Sagan needs to develop the ability to stand back, reflect on life and analyze a situation logically. It is also essential that Sagan learn to communicate. Because Carl senses and feels so much, he may expect others to know what he is experiencing without filling them in. As mentioned earlier, words do not come easily to Carl Sagan but he would benefit greatly by learning to articulate and express himself verbally - otherwise he can stew in his own feelings too much, or find himself at the mercy of his own poorly-understood emotional patterns.

As you will read in the next chapter, Carl Sagan has a well-grounded and down-to-earth orientation towards life - a sense of realism that steadies his moody, imaginative disposition.
