Behind Marx's rather lighthearted, witty and restless demeanor described in the previous chapter, lies a sensitive, poetic soul. Zeppo Marx may cover up his sensitivity with light banter and cleverness - or he may use his verbal and communication skills to express his imagination, kindness and refined sensitivity.
At heart he is very gentle, impressionable and receptive - a dreamer. The world of his imagination, feelings, and intuition is as real to Zeppo Marx as anything in the outer world, though he may have trouble verbalizing or interpreting his inner experiences in a way others can understand. Mystical, artistic, musical, emotional and imaginative, he has a rich inner life, though Marx may seem rather unobtrusive and quiet outwardly. Zeppo Marx usually keeps to himself.
Zeppo shows great sensitivity and empathy toward others and often senses things psychically or intuitively which prove to be correct. He is tolerant, forgiving and nonjudgmental, accepting people unconditionally regardless of their flaws, mistakes, or outward appearance. Zeppo has deep compassion for the suffering of any fellow creature and he often feels the pain of others as if it were his own. Zeppo Marx sympathizes with the needy, the disadvantaged and the misfits of society. He is capable of giving selflessly, living a life of devoted and compassionate service to others, as a healer, physician, social worker or minister. However, Marx tends to give indiscriminately, to let others take advantage of his kindness, and to encourage the weak to remain so by becoming dependent upon him. Zeppo has little sense of boundaries, or of knowing when to say "no". Moderation and self-discipline are not his strong points.
He is a lover and a peacemaker rather than a fighter, and he tries to avoid open conflict. Marx will patiently ignore or "tune out" problems and hope they will go away by themselves, rather than confront them directly and Marx tends to lack the positive, fighting spirit that is sometimes necessary to overcome challenges. He is fluid, open, nonresistant and somewhat passive. Zeppo Marx does things in a subtle, often covert, manner.
His gifts may also lie in the realm of the creative, artistic, or musical, for he possesses great sensitivity, inspiration and limitless imagination. Zeppo Marx has a strong affinity for beauty and love.
His faults include a tendency to be lazy and negligent, and to wallow in self-pity rather than take strong, definite action to change his life for the better. He also tends to become so detached from his immediate environment that he lives in a disorderly, chaotic sort of hodgepodge, though this probably bothers those around Marx more than it bothers him.
His career, reputation, and public image are very important to Marx. Zeppo Marx has a strong desire to be influential or make his mark on the world. The merely personal sphere does not satisfy him; his ambitions include making a major contribution and receiving broad recognition for his unique effort and gifts. Zeppo Marx may undervalue the personal or inner side of life.
Zeppo Marx often feels that he is at cross purposes with himself, for his conscious intentions and desires conflict with his subconscious emotional needs and drives. He is torn in two different directions. Zeppo has difficulty satisfying both his need to be an individual and his need for caring relationships and a sense of belonging. Moreover, Zeppo sends out mixed messages so people do not always know how to respond to him or what Zeppo really wants, thereby creating confusion or conflict in close relationships.
Highly competitive and easily provoked, Zeppo Marx needs challenges and opponents to pit himself against. Zeppo thrives on contest and rivalry. At times his vigorous, combative way of achieving the things he wants antagonizes other people. If Zeppo Marx uses force too often, others will turn against him and oppose him at every turn.
His life is apt to be blessed with more than his share of helpful friends, fortuitous relationships, and doors opening to him at just the right time. Because Zeppo Marx is usually willing to share and to give back to others in a generous way, he continues to generate successes in his life no matter how unfortunate prevailing circumstances are. Zeppo should beware, however, of becoming an opportunist.
Marx always seems to find the right words to verbalize his feelings, especially in regard to love and friendship. Zeppo Marx also has a keen sense of beauty and he probably appreciates art, music or poetry.
Zeppo Marx tends to impose his will upon others in a rather ruthless way, but on the other hand he may also be imposed upon by others. Zeppo feels a constant need to fight for leadership and has a great desire to become a public figure.
