William Butler Yeats motivation
Behind Yeats' rather serious demeanor (described in the previous chapter), he has a much more frivolous, inquisitive and open side. The self-discipline and self-control mentioned earlier help to balance some of the restlessness and flightiness described below. W.B. Yeats has both a strong "adult" component in his nature (mature, careful, realistic), and a strong "child" component (mischievous, playful, fanciful).
William Butler Yeats is, in many ways, an eternal child. His mind is bright, alert, curious, flexible, playful and always eager for new experiences - and his attention span is often quite brief. Yeats grasps ideas quickly and once his initial curiosity has been satisfied, he is ready to move on. William Butler Yeats craves frequent change and variety, as well as new situations and people.
It may be hard for William Butler Yeats to decide just where his talents and true vocation lie, for he has a multitude of interests and is loathe limiting himself by concentrating on just one. He is easily distracted by all of the other fascinating possibilities. His curiosity and restlessness propel W.B. Yeats toward many different experiences in life, and he is willing to taste or try anything once. Doing the same thing over and over again, even if it is something he does well, is tantamount to drudgery for Yeats.
William Butler Yeats lives in his head a great deal - reading, observing, thinking, spinning ideas around - and he needs mental stimulation every bit as much as he needs food and drink. In fact, if W.B. Yeats had to choose between a good book or movie and a good lunch, he would very likely choose the former. William Butler Yeats has a creative mind and he often lives by his wits.
He is also a very social creature, with a strong need to communicate and interact with people. He enjoys using and playing with words and has a real flair for getting his ideas across in a clever, interesting, articulate manner. Writing and/or speaking are areas he has talent for.
William Butler Yeats also has a rather lighthearted and mischievous sense of humor, and often does not take anything too seriously. Though he craves emotional involvement, it is hard for William Butler Yeats to achieve it, for he is frequently unwilling to commit himself to anything, to take responsibility or to limit his personal freedom and mobility.
His happiness lies in using his creativity and language skills to communicate something meaningful, teach, inspire, or bring people together. W.B. Yeats has an unbiased mind and can usually offer a fresh, clear, uncluttered perspective. His faults are his lack of constancy and persistence, and his tendency to overlook or ignore deep emotional issues and other people's feelings.
William Butler Yeats has a very dramatic, creative, expressive nature and he loves to perform. W.B. Yeats enjoys being the center of attention and he seeks to shine, to excel, and to be outstanding in some unique way. He is very involved in his own creativity and self-expression, and takes great pleasure in developing and using his special talents be they artistic, athletic or intellectual. William Butler Yeats has a strong sense of pride.
William Butler Yeats feels that he has the support of his family or others in his environment for his creative efforts and personal goals, which enables him to act with confidence. He is able to satisfy both his need to be an individual and his need for caring relationships and a sense of belonging. He is in harmony with himself and is therefore an effective individual.
William Butler Yeats aims high, dreams big, and has a tremendous sense of what he is capable of achieving. Overconfidence, grandiosity, lack of humility and/or extreme discontent in modest circumstances may be his faults. Generally, however, Yeats' great expectations and enterprising spirit lead to success. Business, especially when there is an element of risk and speculation involved, is ideally suited to W.B. Yeats.
However he also has a more somber side, which keeps Yeats' optimism from becoming ungrounded or overblown. William Butler Yeats tends to seesaw between his faith, vision and high aspirations, and his caution and realism (or fear!). He cannot and does not rely on good luck or grace alone, and he accepts the need for hard work. His skeptical or "somber" side is described below.
Realistic and practical, William Butler Yeats sets goals for himself that are modest enough for him to actually achieve. He is able to tackle long, difficult projects and see them through, for Yeats possesses self-discipline, concentration and perseverance. William Butler Yeats also has a strong sense of responsibility and is very conscientious about fulfilling his obligations. Yeats often does things because he feels it is expected of him.
Although he takes himself and his responsibilities seriously, there is also a part of William Butler Yeats that rebels against rules and restrictions and the need to contend with outside authority. Yeats can feel torn between conforming to the rules or fulfilling his obligations, and breaking free of them. His wilder side will now be described.
Innovative, original, unorthodox and unconventional, he identifies with the role of a rebel, reformer or iconoclast. William Butler Yeats insists upon a great deal of personal freedom and does not easily adapt to others' needs and wishes. W.B. Yeats needs a lifestyle that allows him to be spontaneous. He often feels that he is somehow different from other people and outside of society's mainstream.
He keeps his feelings well under control, but is inclined to feel inferior and insecure. Yeats displays a cool and reserved manner and tries to hide his inner discontentment. William Butler Yeats also has a tendency to cling to the past.
William Butler Yeats feels spiritually bonded with his friends, partners or associates. He is likely to have a good rapport and harmony in his relationships with the opposite sex and enjoys spending time with his partner.
