Victor Fleming's fundamental needs, values, and orientation towards life are symbolized by the four astrological elements. Each person has their own unique balance of these four basic energies: fire (warmth, inspiration, enthusiasm), earth (practicality, realism, material interests), air (social and intellectual qualities), and water (emotional needs and feelings).
Fleming's "elemental make-up" is described below. Remember that most people are "unbalanced" or lopsided, and if Victor is lacking or deficient in a certain element (or elements), it simply means that he needs to consciously develop that particular aspect in order to appreciate and/or work harder in that dimension of life.
Sometimes we overestimate the element that we are least endowed with, sensing it as a lack within ourselves, but more often we neglect or ignore it. The qualities described below will be reiterated and explained in more detail in the following pages.
Victor Fleming has an abundance of energy but he prefers to play, discover and create, rather than work. Unless he is fortunate enough to be able to do this, Victor may have trouble coping with the demands of the workaday world. The constraints and limitations imposed by material, routine responsibilities weigh heavily upon Fleming and he is apt to resist (or feel incapable of) taking them on. However, it is important for Victor Fleming to impose some structure, discipline, and consistency on his life in order to realize the dreams he cherishes. Otherwise, though he has ideas, talent, inspiration, vision and hopes for the future, Victor Fleming may have nothing tangible to show for it. One of his challenges is to come down to earth, make do with what there is (even though it is not likely to be as grand as Fleming would like), and acquire some patience and humility in the process. Victor Fleming needs to learn to be practical!
Especially when young, Victor Fleming is apt to push himself beyond his limits and burn out by ignoring his bodily needs, trying to do too much and not giving himself time to rest and relax.
In addition to Victor's energetic, ambitious nature, as described above, he also has a need for tranquility and a deep, inner life, which will be described in more detail in Chapter 3.
As you will read in the next chapter, Victor Fleming is able to sufficiently detach himself from his own self-centered aims and desires to take an active interest in other people. Fleming is actually quite social and frequently moderates his egocentric tendencies in order to accommodate others' viewpoints.
