Tom DeLay challenges and difficulties
He is very self-conscious and has a great need for ego-affirmation and praise. Expressing himself freely and openly is not easy for DeLay. Tom DeLay tends to work hard at playing and "having fun", rather than being light-hearted and spontaneous. Developing self-love and self-acceptance regardless of his "performance" is an important task for Tom.
His attitude toward religion, philosophy, and politics is very conservative and possibly narrow or rigid. On the one hand, Tom DeLay may believe in nothing that is speculative or intangible, requiring proof for any idea presented to him. Each idea is thoroughly and systematically examined. On the other hand, Tom may tenaciously cling to his grand philosophical or metaphysical beliefs and opinions, refusing to modify them or to be open and receptive to others' insights and perspectives.
His overall outlook on life is serious, and Tom DeLay may feel that life or God will punish him if he does not watch his steps!
Now we will discuss patterns of behavior which Tom DeLay instinctively and habitually reverts to when under stress - a mostly subconscious process that he is apt to over indulge in because it is so familiar and hence easy for him. The direction Tom DeLay needs to follow in order to develop balance, greater awareness, and wholeness is also described.
Tom DeLay needs to take what he has learned (either through formal education or his own questing and life experience) and share it with others, communicate it or express it in a way that can benefit others. Knowledge and understanding, which does not enhance either Tom's quality of life or that of persons in his world, is of little real value. Putting DeLay's understanding, philosophy, and convictions into practice in his daily relationships, and in the multiple choices he makes every day, will enable Tom DeLay to really test his belief system and discover more about life.
When under stress, Tom DeLay is apt to seek refuge in imagining that the grass is greener elsewhere, rather than working with what is at hand. Tom DeLay needs to cultivate his ability to live in the present!
It is in his marriage and other intimate, one-to-one relationships that he is most likely to wrestle with these issues. He may see the qualities that he needs to develop more fully (described above) in his partner. It is important for Tom DeLay to recognize, appreciate, and listen to the people in his life who express such attributes, as well as to develop them himself. Tom DeLay has to put energy and attention into learning about others, and about himself through others.
The specific habits which are likely to hold Tom DeLay back, or which he is prone to overdo, especially during stressful periods, include:
Being bound to past events and experiences because of his desire to belong, deep attachments to family and the familiar (even if they are neither nourishing nor helpful), the desire to nurture or be nurtured by others, and a strong resistance to cutting the umbilical cord.
Tom DeLay has a strong desire to break records and set an example for others through his own achievements. Tom tends to spur others on to improve results and his relationships with others is for the purpose of bettering conditions.
