Though Haynes appears somewhat unconventional or liberal in his approach to life (as mentioned in the previous chapter), he also has a very down to earth, practical, and rather conservative side. He is more attached to tradition and respectful of the ways of the past than he might let on. Balancing, or reconciling between the old and the new is a constant struggle for Haynes.
Serious, disciplined and quietly ambitious, he is driven to prove himself and to achieve material accomplishments and success. His work, his position in the world, and his contributions to society are very important to Haynes. Todd Haynes probably has great intellectual ability and curiosity. Todd never seem to run out of ideas and always welcomes the study of new subjects, the more abstract the better. But he also has the basic sense to translate abstract ideas into practical reality.
