Tim Berners-Lee motivation
Though Tim Berners-Lee seems rather cautious and conservative (as discussed in the previous chapter), he has a much more playful, humorous side as well. Moreover, the combination of his attention to detail and cautious, circumspect approach to life, coupled with his youthful curiosity and quick mind makes Tim mentally sharp, articulate and clever.
Tim Berners-Lee is, in many ways, an eternal child. His mind is bright, alert, curious, flexible, playful and always eager for new experiences - and his attention span is often quite brief. Berners-Lee grasps ideas quickly and once his initial curiosity has been satisfied, he is ready to move on. Tim Berners-Lee craves frequent change and variety, as well as new situations and people.
It may be hard for Tim Berners-Lee to decide just where his talents and true vocation lie, for he has a multitude of interests and is loathe limiting himself by concentrating on just one. He is easily distracted by all of the other fascinating possibilities. His curiosity and restlessness propel Tim toward many different experiences in life, and he is willing to taste or try anything once. Doing the same thing over and over again, even if it is something he does well, is tantamount to drudgery for Berners-Lee.
Tim Berners-Lee lives in his head a great deal - reading, observing, thinking, spinning ideas around - and he needs mental stimulation every bit as much as he needs food and drink. In fact, if Tim had to choose between a good book or movie and a good lunch, he would very likely choose the former. Tim Berners-Lee has a creative mind and he often lives by his wits.
He is also a very social creature, with a strong need to communicate and interact with people. He enjoys using and playing with words and has a real flair for getting his ideas across in a clever, interesting, articulate manner. Writing and/or speaking are areas he has talent for.
Tim Berners-Lee also has a rather lighthearted and mischievous sense of humor, and often does not take anything too seriously. Though he craves emotional involvement, it is hard for Tim Berners-Lee to achieve it, for he is frequently unwilling to commit himself to anything, to take responsibility or to limit his personal freedom and mobility.
His happiness lies in using his creativity and language skills to communicate something meaningful, teach, inspire, or bring people together. Tim has an unbiased mind and can usually offer a fresh, clear, uncluttered perspective. His faults are his lack of constancy and persistence, and his tendency to overlook or ignore deep emotional issues and other people's feelings.
His career, reputation, and public image are very important to Berners-Lee. Tim Berners-Lee has a strong desire to be influential or make his mark on the world. The merely personal sphere does not satisfy him; his ambitions include making a major contribution and receiving broad recognition for his unique effort and gifts. Tim Berners-Lee may undervalue the personal or inner side of life.
There is an ongoing, subtle conflict within Tim Berners-Lee, between his conscious attitudes and aspirations, and his deeper emotional and subconscious beliefs, needs, and feelings. This creates considerable inner stress and sometimes paralyzing indecision, mostly due to the fact that Tim may be trying to follow a path that is at odds with his subconscious desires. Chronic tightness or tension in his body may well be a signal that Tim Berners-Lee is denying or suppressing the messages from his subconscious or emotional self.
Ideally, Tim Berners-Lee will learn to accept the two quite different aspects of his and to express both of them. If he cannot do this, Berners-Lee is apt to attract many relationships into his life with people who reflect his denied or repressed qualities, and who seem to make his life difficult. (Read also chapter 4 in order to get a better picture of the duality described here.)
Tim has to overcome considerable hardship in order to fulfill his personal destiny. However, he does have the strength and stamina necessary to do so. Support and helpful guidance from his father or other significant men in his life may well be lacking. In fact, their disapproval of Tim and their harsh criticism are apt to be two of his greatest handicaps, and at times he may feel quite discouraged and alone. But true self-reliance and a solid sense of his own powers may well be the silver lining to that cloud in his life. Tim Berners-Lee needs to learn to follow his own creative impulses and heart's desires, regardless of what his critics or the authorities say.
He keeps his feelings well under control, but is inclined to feel inferior and insecure. Berners-Lee displays a cool and reserved manner and tries to hide his inner discontentment. Tim Berners-Lee also has a tendency to cling to the past.
Tim Berners-Lee has a harmonious balance between his body, soul and spirit. He enjoys intellectual challenges from others, but tends to form his own mental attitudes and philosophies of life. He may be interested in studying human nature and matters of health.
Both sensitive and sensuous, Tim blends charm and energy. Tim Berners-Lee has a healthy sexuality and a good balance between activity and passivity. He may be fond of singing, dancing, music and drama. Romance comes easily to Tim, and his romantic relationships are passionate.
