The Undertaker

Although The Undertaker appears gentle and sympathetic toward others (as explained in the previous chapter), he is also a "warrior". Mark Callous sometimes feels torn between these two facets of his character: the sensitive, tenderhearted, home-loving side, and the assertive, competitive, risk-taking side. People who first meet The Undertaker often think that he is a "softy", but later find out that he is strong willed and pursues his goals aggressively.

He is a person who thrives on challenge, and he often feels that he must battle his way through life, relying on no one and nothing but his own strength, intelligence and courage. The Undertaker believes in being totally honest, true to himself and his own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are Mark Callous' gods, and he has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.

The Undertaker craves the freedom to do things in his own way, and he works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not his style. Mark Calaway likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.

The Undertaker loves action and if others are settling down into a nice, comfortable little rut, then he is always ready to stir things up, do something new, make changes and introduce some fresh blood. Routine and sameness are tantamount to death for him. He is not satisfied with the personal sphere alone; his ambitions include making a major contribution and receiving broad recognition for his unique effort and gifts. The Undertaker may undervalue the personal or inner facet of life.

The Undertaker is loving and well loved by others, and has a strong need for relationships that offer kindness, friendship and affection. His artistic and creative powers are also well developed and Mark Calaway does everything in a harmonious, gracious, pleasing manner. Aesthetics are very important to Mark Callous, as are his personal appearance and attractiveness.

The Undertaker often feels that he is at cross purposes with himself, for his conscious intentions and desires conflict with his subconscious emotional needs and drives. He is torn in two different directions. Mark Calaway has difficulty satisfying both his need to be an individual and his need for caring relationships and a sense of belonging.
