Because Thaao Penghlis seems to be such a gentle, tolerant, accepting person (as mentioned in the previous chapter), he can startle people with some of his very pointed, bluntly honest statements. Even though he is sensitive and empathetic, he can also be quite tactless at times. His good will and good intentions, however, usually prevail. With Penghlis' free-flowing imagination (described earlier) and his great restlessness (discussed below), he is apt to be a wanderer, and perhaps somewhat of an escapist.
He is a gambler and an adventurer at heart, one who loves to take risks, to discover and explore new worlds, and to travel the untried path rather than the safe, reliable one. He is independent, freedom loving, and often very restless. He needs a lifestyle that provides opportunities for travel, movement, change, and meeting new people. A steady routine, which offers much in the way of security but little in the way of space and freedom, is odious to him.
To Thaao Penghlis, life is a journey and an adventure that is endlessly interesting and rich with possibilities, and it may be difficult for him to decide where to focus his attention and efforts. Thaao Penghlis probably traveled around and experimented with many different paths before he settled on a particular career. Or he may go from one project to the next, for once the challenge and vital interest is gone, he is very quick to move on. Commitment, discipline, focus and concentration are not his strong points. Penghlis can be irresponsible and disinclined to take on the burdens and limitations of adult life.
An incurable optimist, he has big dreams, aspirations and hopes for the future and is usually engaged in pursuing a far-off goal. Thaao Penghlis has a great deal of faith and trust in life and failures do not crush his spirit. Penghlis always bounces back from disappointments, often with another bright dream or scheme. Thaao Penghlis has a sporting, playful attitude toward life and he is philosophical about his mistakes. Thaao has the ability to sense future trends, to see the big picture, and he likes to theorize and speculate. However, he gets annoyed with all the details and practical requirements required to implement his theories.
Penghlis expresses himself in a very open, direct and straightforward manner and is often blunt and tactless as well. Because he does not take himself too seriously, he may not realize how deeply his candid statements can wound more sensitive souls. In fact, though he may not realize it, Thaao's insensitivity and lack of understanding regarding others' feelings is probably one of his worst faults.
Thaao Penghlis enjoys being in close relationships but also needs freedom and he does not do well with a possessive, clinging, or emotionally demanding partner. He is quite generous, and heartily dislikes pettiness in others. Someone who shares his ideals, his sense of fun and his zest for life would be the right companion for Penghlis.
Penghlis is very attracted to world travel, foreign cultures and studies that expand his intellectual horizons and broaden his understanding of the world.
Thaao Penghlis is philosophically inclined and concerned with seeking answers to the big questions of life or getting an overall picture of any situation. Abstract concepts and/or plans for the future occupy his mind much of the time.
Thaao Penghlis feels that he has the support of his family or others in his environment for his creative efforts and personal goals, which enables him to act with confidence. He is able to satisfy both his need to be an individual and his need for caring relationships and a sense of belonging. He is in harmony with himself and is therefore an effective individual.
His life is apt to be blessed with more than his share of helpful friends, fortuitous relationships, and doors opening up to him at just the right time. Because Thaao Penghlis is usually willing to share and to give back to others in a generous way, he continues to generate success in his life no matter how unfortunate prevailing circumstances are. Thaao should beware, however, of becoming an opportunist.
However he also has a more somber side, which keeps Penghlis' optimism from becoming ungrounded or overblown. Thaao Penghlis tends to seesaw between his faith, vision and high aspirations, and his caution and realism (or fear!). He cannot and does not rely on good luck or grace alone, and he accepts the need for hard work. His skeptical or "somber" side is described below.
Thaao has to overcome considerable hardship in order to fulfill his personal destiny. However, he has the strength and stamina necessary to do so. Support and helpful guidance from his father or other significant men in his life may well be lacking. In fact, their disapproval of Thaao and their harsh criticism are apt to be two of his greatest handicaps, and at times he may feel quite discouraged and alone. But true self-reliance and a solid sense of his own powers may well be the silver lining to that cloud in his life. Thaao Penghlis needs to learn to follow his own creative impulses and heart's desires, regardless of what his critics or the authorities may say.
Thaao Penghlis tends to become excited and upset at the slightest cause, generating tension with others. Thaao also could encounter strange experiences or coincidences with others. He may have a feeling of being different than others and he wants to be his own person.
