His apparent gentleness and noncompetitive stance toward life (described in the previous chapter) may be very deceiving because at heart he is a "warrior". Serge Gainsbourg may feel at odds with himself, sometimes being very passive or benevolent, and at other times, very assertive and concerned primarily with himself.
