Although it may seem that he is just patiently plodding along, Rowan Atkinson is actually quite shrewd and has a clear purpose in mind. He is far more astute and ambitious than his rather gentle, forbearing manner (described in the previous chapter) would suggest.

Serious, disciplined and quietly ambitious, he is driven to prove himself and to achieve material accomplishments and success. His work, his position in the world, and his contributions to society are very important to Atkinson.
