Behind Spector's nice, pleasant, easygoing demeanor (described in the previous chapter) lies a very clear-eyed, objective, no-nonsense person. This aspect of Spector's character is described in more detail below.

Serious, disciplined and quietly ambitious, he is driven to prove himself and to achieve material accomplishments and success. His work, his position in the world, and his contributions to society are very important to Spector. Phil Spector will persevere through enormous hardship and frustration in order to reach a goal he has set for himself, and he often sacrifices much in the area of personal relationships and home life in order to do so.

Phil Spector has a thoughtful, quiet and self-contained disposition and does not readily show his inner feelings and needs. Phil Spector seems to always be in control, capable, efficient and strong. He is often the person in the family or group who is given more responsibility (and more work) than the others. He is highly conscientious and even as a child he possessed great maturity, soberness, and worldly wisdom.

He is basically a pragmatic realist, and though he may have all sorts of dreams, ideals and colorful theories, he feels that the ultimate test of a concept is its practical usefulness. Phil has an innate shrewdness and business sense, and there is a bit of the cynic in him as well.

He is clear-headed, detached and objective, and is not swayed by emotional dramatics. He is often authoritarian - strictly fair, but without mercy. However he also has a more somber side, which keeps Spector's optimism from becoming ungrounded or overblown. Phil Spector tends to seesaw between his faith, vision and high aspirations, and his caution and realism (or fear!). Realistic and practical, Phil Spector sets goals for himself that are modest enough for him to actually achieve. He is able to tackle long, difficult projects and see them through, for Spector possesses self-discipline, concentration and perseverance. Phil Spector also has a strong sense of responsibility and is very conscientious about fulfilling his obligations. Spector often does things because he feels it is expected of him.

He is prone to fanaticism and cannot go halfway in anything he does. His extremism may seem (and actually be) obsessive and somewhat blind. That is, Phil Spector does not always consciously understand why he feels as driven or intense about a given course of action as he does. There is a strong element of fate or inevitability in Spector's life. A significant death or loss in his close relationships is likely to profoundly influence Phil Spector and shape important life decisions and he may consciously seek out intense, life-or-death experiences as well.
